Oh yeah, GPS' work so well indoors too. </sarcasm>
According to a fellow I have had the misfortune of both having had to work with and listen too, told me today that all late model Austar STB's have been fitted with a GPS so their location can be verified to being where they were installed.
When I said they cant transmit or 'Call Home' as they are not connected to the phone lines, he gave me a smirky silly look as if to say 'I know Better'.
I dont think its a state secret that both Austar and Foxtel stb's have traveled more kilometres than the Leyland Bros, Ted Egan and the Late Malcom Douglas and there are those far from their official homes year round.
This bloke is quite normal as such but then he comes out with comments like this which does take the breath away.
Like most he also 'knows someone who knows someone' who has 'Funny Cards' but oddly 'They' are as illusive as a full bottle of Metho at the Derro's Ball when you start asking too many questions.
I was wondering if this installation of a GPS in the STB was an update those days of the Black Helicopters were flying about checking on the Red LED in LNB's that indicated an unauthorised card was being used ???
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!

Exactly, and without a backhaul there would be no point other than to log the location(s) internally and they check it when the box arrives back at base in X years time. There's no way they'd install a 3G/GSM modem as a backhaul connection either. Our home theatre speakers would all be doing this all the time, annoying the hell out of us.....

can I have some of his drugs?
True, ive also heard that Austar have a black helicopter used to pickup what customers are tuning into, tell him to put tin foil over his LNB, it throws them off.
As if Austar would spend 1c more on their crappy boxes than they need to.

If the cant even afford to swap out the last 20000 4.1 cards i dont think they could afford to embed GPS chips lol...

Prior to the large scale introduction of GPS, people claimed they had "tracking chips" in them
How times have changed with technology
I noticed the RED LED on my LNB had come back on the other night......

They 'Didnt think the Police' (or anyone else) would use gathered information for doing just that ??
That's as pathetic as the Govt saying they didnt expect a large number of people to sign up for the 'Free' Batts and the Solar Panel Bonus schemes.
Now all they need is a way to put your Credit Card details into the GPS so that when it 'Calls Home', they can just deduct your speeding Fines as you Go !!!

As fair as I know all GPS modules require an antenna to receive data not send data, the guy is playing with himself
I have a receiver the size of a matchbox that reliably locks up in my office which is essentially a windowless concrete bunker underneath a two story building.
If Austar are using those, they probably have sneaked a 3G connection into their latest STBs that it phones home with.
