    Default Setting Up DVR's for Network Viewing

    Howdy, i set up a few of these DVR's with a couple of cameras for a few mates everynow & again. I have one for myself and enjoy the tinkering and challenge of the installation & set up. BUT these things are just driving me mad because every DVR seems to have different set up parameters. Is there somewhere i can look to get a dummies guide to set these things.

    I've you tubed & googled it too many times.

    Depends on the DVR some have webservers built-in others require network client software. However the basics are;

    1. Set an IP address on the unit
    2. Set a port on the unit or take note of the factory set port number
    3. Port forward your router to the DVR

    If it's static you're set to go, if not, you'll need to set up a DynamicDNS account of some sort.

    Also make sure you set up the gateway (typically LAN IP of the router) and if required, the dns server. Once you've done that, test it on the LAN to make sure it's working before trying off site. As for port forwarding, go to , for details on how to do it with what ever router may be on site.

    if your testing internally on your network (windows pc)
    go to search, type cmd open it up
    type - ping (space) XXX.X.X.XXX (X = Ip address) then "Enter"
    it should reply the request if you have done it right, then you can move onto the external connection

    i know when i set up the DVR if my mate has a static IP address i can set it up
    the IP address is the IP address of the Machine (DVR) in the router i forward the port relating to this IP address.
    The Gateway = the IP address of the router
    Netmask = 255.255.255.0
    Primary DNS = ? (what should this be)
    Secondary DNS = ?
    PORT = i use 8000

    in the router i set the ports 7990 > 8010 open.

    Am I on the right path?

    Primary DNS/Secondary DNS = not needed unless you are running a Domain Name Server.

    "in the router i set the ports 7990 > 8010 open" - There's no need to open anymore ports than necessary. Just port forward the one port used in the DVR.

    I.e. In your router configuration, it will require a Start Port and an End port. You would enter 8000 in both fields.

    ok this is where i get stuck.
    When i get it going in a sense, i can type the URL in on a computer of the DVR IP address of 192.168.1.99: 8000 and i can access the webcam images.

    But when i enter the external static IP address of 203.XXX.XX .XXX:8000 i cannot access the application.

    This is where i need help again.

    You need to set up port forwarding in the router. In other words, you need the router to forward any requests to the WAN IP (203.XXX.XX .XXX:8000) on to the LAN IP (192.168.1.99).

    I posted a while ago a short how-to here in the CCTV Forum.

    if you have a separate router and modem you will have to open ports on both for it to work

    now i am getting somewhere, but not everywhere!
    I can view the DVR webcam from my iphone Eagle Eyes App. But if i try the same settings in IE on a PC i cannot see the webcam. Even on an external network.

    Getting me Down this thing is
    If i go to canyouseeme.org
    the port 8000 is open and it can be seen.

    It has to be the settings in IE. If you can see it from the iPhone app and "canyouseeme.org" then your router is correctly forwarding requests to the LAN device on that port.

    you tried two different pcs? and neither work

    tried it on an external network away from the DVR (eg at work / gfs house). theres no reason that it wont work on PC but will on iphone app. i have never had this issue, maybe the other way around.

    if you put the ip address into IE browser what comes up when you hit enter? and are you leaving the http:// in or deleting it?

    Thanks All.
