Default Xbox or Ps3-which should I get?

Have to buy a present for my son's birthday in a little while.

I know this forum community has quite a few enthusiasts of both these, but am curious as to which is the most popular machine overall.

    And why?

(please move this if it should be in a more techish area)

What experiences have people had good and bad that make them prefer one over the other.

What games does he play? Thats the way to answer the question.
Coding in C is like sending a 3 year old to do groceries. You gotta tell them exactly what you want or you'll end up with a cupboard full of pop tarts and pancake mix.

some games are available on one platform and not the other
xbox 360 can be moded and games can be backed up
ps3 no mods yet but it also gives you a blue ray player

wii is the best of all three i reckon , but if I had the choice of the 360 or the PS3 , I would take the PS3 even though it cannot be modded atm

Wii is the best as far as I am concerned.....but if you have to choose between 360 or PS3, then I would go the PS3 just because of the blueray player option.

PS3 for sure they are going to release a 80Gb version soon hopefully which should be backwards compatible with PS2 games like C&C and Liberty City etc just like the 60Gb version was when PS3 was orginally released plus it has built in Wifi and bluetooth and eventually will be hacked like the PSP happy days.

Toss a coin and go with that. Or finding out what his mates have might be a better approach.

Personally i think the 360 is better but really there isnt that much difference, other than Blue ray capabilities that is. There arent too may exclusive titles anymore. If its a good game then its across both formats (someone can correct me if im wrong).

A big advantage is to have ability to get "backed up" stuff so that is fairly important me thinks.?

Always in my opinion. Unless either you or him want to fork out a fortune every week on new games.

Thats the problem, regardless which system you choose, games can cost above $100. Me personally PS3 would be the go, awesome graphics, blue-ray player, think what it cost these days for a standalone blue-ray player.

And pretty soon from what ive heard, there will be a chip available for the older PS games.

    I have a 360 and PS3. The 360 gets a canning, the PS3 is gathering dust.

Bluray movies are too expensive, I have only bought 2 for $25 ea. Bargains are to hard find.

360 streams better than the PS3. Sometimes a video file has errors, where the PS3 stops playing the 360 pauses then continues to play.

My advice 360 all the way.
