not sure with the n95 but with the1100 navigator, I have found that if the gps is used frequently it doesnt take long to get connected, but takes a fair while if it hasnt been used for a few days

I'm using a WM6 smartphone with external GPS (Bluetooth). I find that I have to turn on the GPS first, wait for it to lock (there's a green LED on the GPS unit) before starting the software on the phone.

to get a quicker signal, make sure the phone slide is up/open. it takes a little longer when first time used for the day but then is much quicker for the rest of the day.
