I would be having your domain hosted and you usually get half a dozen email address included in the deal.

    don't do it.

too much work / effort / poor reliability if your on a residential internet connection.

Speak to shane @ he should be able to sort out what you need, prices are awesome considering he owns / runs the servers himself.

I've had some pricks "resell" me hosting in the past and left me high and dry whenever they've had problems they couldn't fix. (jsnhosting anyone??) Shane's level of support is second to none. I highly recommend having a quick chat with him and discussing your needs before going any further

I have to agree , any reason why you need to host it at home ? Its far easier and cheaper to pay for hosting these days.

Also agree with Urban about Shane, he has saved my bacon more than once

Was just thought for the family's personal emails.

I had look around and there seems to be some good cheap deals around

    between $25.00 to $30.00 a year.

personally I think majority Australian hosting providers are way to expensive.

considering that most US operated hosting providers now have

    - 24/7 tech support with Australian number
    - Cheap Prices
    - servers based in Sigapoure
    - great ping times
    - and greater than 99.9% uptime

$20.00 seems allot to pay per month for Australian based hosts maybe I'm just a tight arse.

Thanks for the good words Urban and Sanity.

Chieflets - As for hosting your own mail server, unless you know what your doing, I would not recommend that you even attempt it. You could end up listed in RBL's or even kicked off your ISP for breach of TOS / TAC. There is a lot more to running a mail server that just installing the software.

As for hosting you really get what you pay for when it comes to hosting. A lot of hosting providers all over the world, even here in Australia, operate as virtual providers meaning that they rent server space from another provider, who could be renting that same space from another provider, who could be renting.... etc etc

Other issues that arise from the super duper cheap hosting like google and numerous others is that they are often listed in the Realtime Black Lists due to the spammers that sign up with them all the time because of the cheap prices. So you end up having trouble with your emails not getting delivered, or they get rejected or even just lost completely. This is where you often find out how bad the support is.Because your paying so little for your hosting, they really do not care about a couple of emails not getting delivered and often blame it on the remote site who is blocking them due to their spam problem.

Whilst these issues may be acceptable for home or personal use, they are certainly not acceptable for business use. And while I happily admit that I charge more than these places, I can also say truthfully that all accounts get looked after as if they are a huge corporate client and I take the time and effort to ensure that the email system is secure and spam free.

I could write a entire white paper on this subject, but I think what I have written here gives a good overview of what to consider when choosing a hosting provider.
What would you do if your server was stolen or failed beyond repair?
