    Default CCTV and IP Cameras

    Hi there

Any opinion on the traditional CCTV cam versus the newer technology of the IP Cameras?

The cost is one major factor at the moment.

It also depends on what you are trying to achieve.

For example a petrol station if you want to cover say 4 pumps you would need at least 4 analogue cams, if you went megapixel you could get away with 1 -2 cameras

It’s hard to beat good analogue cameras in low light situations but if you are after high resolution images (must have good lighting) the network cameras are the way to go.

Agree with 2secure's sentiments. Analogue isn't going to die over night. There'll still be a market for it for quite some time to come particularly with the penny pinchers. Having said that, IP CCTV is comming along in leaps and bounds and the prices are dropping considerably. It's now possible to get a big name 16ch NVR for less than some 16ch DVRs, and the prices of cameras are getting closer too.

If you have decent lighting and are looking at the best solution for now and the future, there is little excuse to go with analogue unless you're on a budget.

In some cases a quality analogue camera will give better performance than an IP camera. Especially in difficult lighting situations.

If you are looking for resolution, don't just think a mega pixel camera will help. I was on a job recently where the 5MP cameras were giving worse results than tha analogue camera they replaced.
This is because the compression applied was not a quality implementation.
