You need a router, (or a machine acting as a router), or only have one machine on at a time, which sort of defeats the purpose.
Im just wondering if its possible to put a switch on the back of a cable modem ie SB5100
and share a internet connection? or does it need to go through some form of a router?

actually the modem is one of those new telstra ones with a inbuilt wireless router but only one eithernet port hence i thought u could just use a switch.
it should have dhcp built in so i see no reason as to why it could not run through a hub and just assign static ips for what ever is connected
dont say linux if i wanted it id install it
I do exactly this with my setup - a four port ADSL device, and a simple hub on the end to allow me to have five devices connected (three PCs, a wireless AP and a VoIP box). I hate DHCP. I manually assign everything.
And it all works without a problem in the world.
thants mitaux
thats what im doing as well with my router
ive got 2 8 port switches on the back of it.
i havnt used that kind of cable modem before though so i wasnt sure the routing capabilites, hence the question.
his collected a switch off me today so ill update the thread in a day or two for future reference
