Jimbo, I too have a Linux-unutu setup. Its a windows2K3 PC running VM ware.
I just bought a couple of EZmini usb card readers for a play reckon they'll work?
Figured this was a good a place as any to post,...
I managed to get the Smargo SmartReaderPlus shown going in Linux-Ubuntu - thanks for organising it warbo.
Ubuntu recognises it straight off, however is gets disconnected as shown below in the logs:
After a bit of searching, apparently this only occurs on Ubuntu, of which I'm running and is caused by brltty - a braille terminal providing console access for the blind. Don't need it! You can remove with apt-get remove brlttyCode:May 29 17:44:41 mythtv kernel: [1282955.792000] usb 2-6: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 4 May 29 17:44:42 mythtv kernel: [1282957.012000] usb 2-6: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice May 29 17:44:42 mythtv kernel: [1282957.016000] ftdi_sio 2-6:1.0: FTDI USB Serial Device converter detected May 29 17:44:42 mythtv kernel: [1282957.016000] drivers/usb/serial/ftdi_sio.c: Detected FT232BM May 29 17:44:42 mythtv kernel: [1282957.016000] usb 2-6: FTDI USB Serial Device converter now attached to ttyUSB0 May 29 17:44:45 mythtv kernel: [1282959.812000] usb 2-6: usbfs: interface 0 claimed by ftdi_sio while 'brltty' sets config #1 May 29 17:44:45 mythtv kernel: [1282959.904000] ftdi_sio ttyUSB0: FTDI USB Serial Device converter now disconnected from ttyUSB0 May 29 17:44:45 mythtv kernel: [1282959.904000] ftdi_sio 2-6:1.0: device disconnected
Device then gets recognised as /dev/ttyUSB0
The line you need in CCcam is:
SERIAL READER : /dev/ttyUSB0 smartreader+
The rest is as per any other reader,....
The above may be of use to others.
Now,... I've downloaded the tools for this reader smartreader_v103, transferred both srp_update_x86 and srp_tools_x86 onto the host and executed them:
srp_update_x86 reports: smartreader+ version v3.8
srp_tools_x86 reports: no smartreader found
Does anyone know why tools doesn't locate the reader ?
Cheers,
Jim.....

Couldn't tell you,.. it seems as though there are may readers 'branded with that name'.
If the device is supported by Linux, then I'd suggest there's a high chance it'll work.
Now in your instance, running Ubuntu as a virtual machine - I don't know how well VMware provides access to physical devices. I've heard that serial ports seem to work, but don't know with USB.
Guess, you plug it in and see what the logs say.
Jim.....
Just in case anyone needs it here's some info and drivers

Some more discussion on these readers here
Does require registering but worth it
If you want to run the smartreader on a DM7020 and you are using PLI Iolite, here is a quick install method:
telnet to your dreambox
run "ipkg update"
run "ipkg install kernel-module-ftdi-sio"
add the following 2 lines at the end of the file /etc/init.d/bootup
insmod /lib/modules/2.6.9/kernel/drivers/usb/serial/usbserial.ko
insmod /lib/modules/2.6.9/kernel/drivers/usb/serial/ftdi_sio.ko
reboot :-)
Is that the same as install the USBtoSERIAL under the blue button?
Which image?
It was with PLI... but now I can't find it.. I think they took it away with a menu update
You have probably noticed by now but I get the same issue after running CCcam. Even if after you stop it. Pulling the reader from the USB and re-inserting it gives me access with srp_tools_x86 again. I also tried reloading the ftdi_sio and usbserial modules but it still seems to need a loss of power.
I also found that mine didn't work at all until I used the srp tools to change the mode from dreambox to normal (or PC). Seemed to come set to DB.
Mind if I ask what card / speed u folks get? I have the smargo set to auto and im running and endeesss card in cccam at 7800000. Can't seem to push it any higher.
All in all its good so far. Cheers warbo.

Don't trust me. I have malfunctioned.
The usb2serial is back in the menu
Dear Friend!
Does anyone know when can I buy the Smargo SmartReaderPlus in Autralia?
Best Regards
I have an update on these readers and also some testing results from other users.
When using these readers you'll get the most out of them if you use cccam. This is because the readers work in 3 Modes (0,1 and 2).
Mode 0 = Auto T=0, T=1, 3.57 or 6 auto selected based on T in phoenix mode
Mode 1 = Set frequency in phoenix mode (commonly used with NewCS and a set frequency)
Mode 2 = Smart Mode - Undocumented - Only implemented by CCcam Team the readers work in 2 modes.
Mode 2 is in "smartreader mode" and only CCcam has implemented this feature. When CCcam sees the word "smartreader+" after the device entry, the reader automatically enters "smartreader mode" which means that phoenix is off..............so no more byte echos and other stuff you don't really want.
In mode 2 the reader switches automatically as CCcam tells it to so the default setting for ndz card in CCcam is start at 3.57 Mhz, get the ATR, hey its an NDZ card, switch to 5.34 Mhz. The only control you have from that point on is whats inside your CCcam cfg, the rest doesn't matter.
There has been some confusion in relation to the readers and the set freq. When you set the smartreader to be a certain freq in cccam.cfg file the smartreader will try and read it at that exact freq and if it can't then it will read it at the next lowest available freq.
Here are the available frequencies:
3.20, 3.43, 3.69, 4.00, 4.36, 4.80, 5.34, 6.00, 6.86, 8.00, 9.61, 12.0 and 16.0 MHz
So, if you have this line in your cccam.cfg SMARTCARD CLOCK FREQUENCY: /dev/ttyUSB0 7800000 then the reader will actually read the card @ 6.86mhz.
Testing a ndz card at this freq returned .242 ecm response. The card was recognised @ 8000001 however ecm responses were no better and actually remained the same.
Testing a "black challenged" card @ SMARTCARD CLOCK FREQUENCY: /dev/ttyUSB0 6000001 returned .190 ecm response. However @ 6860001 reurned .140 ecm response.
Thanks for all that warbo, you definitely have done your research on these readers! Well done!
Thanks warbo, huge difference with the smargo and a remote connection. Check out the pics.
Smargo @ mode 2
Phoenix @ 6
Has any one got this reader working properly on cccam Ununtu? I'f it works ok on this distro then I'm keen to give it a go. ATM I'm running serial readers on CCcam and for NDS the responce times are pretty average. I think the Smargo will help a lot If I can get it to work on Ubuntu?
Good work Warbo!
Are you in Brissie palmac?
If so I'm happy to lend you mine so you can try before you buy.
