Default Setting up CCTV/ DVR etc...

I'm looking at setting up a surveillance system. When building the house I made sure that I ran both rg6 and cat5e to each of the points I envisaged having a camera placed at ( ie 8 places).

What I would like to hear peoples opinions is what type of system I should go for?

    1. Should I go for a dedicated standalone 8 channel DVR with cameras that run std video out ? or,
    2. Should I go for IP cameras and setup via a switch router and server pc?

Which system would be more reliable?
Is there any drawback in one compared to the other?

What decent equipment would you recommend?

If I go for an IP/server based system, is there readily available software to run such an application?

To take the discussion away from cost, lets just assume the cost of either system is the same as I'm interested from a technical standpoint?

    Thanks,

    JK

If cost is not a question, a decent megapixel IP system with adequate lighting will serve you better than the equivelent analogue system provided its configured correctly. Name brand IP cameras such as Axis, Arecont, Panasonic and Mobotix are what you should be looking at. Bear in mind that there are licencing requirements for some configurations. And, although you can run free software, you may be better off looking towards a hardware NVR such that it's then a completely separate system. Video surveillance is very resource hungry on any PC/Server and the processes often don't play to well with others running on the system.

Think about the cost though as there is a reasonable, although diminishing, difference between analogue and IP when you're talking decent CCTV.

One last thing, avoid eBay systems. If you have to ask why, then you should be employing the services of a professional to install your system.

Oh, and if you do go IP, don't forget a PoE switch.

    Drift,

There are often bargains on eBay of name-brand gear. Hell, some of it's cheaper from US eBay retail stores than from wholesale distributors Down Under!

And if it's sold in working condition, there's probably not much wrong with it - you're not buying a car.

However you need to know what you're buying and know what you're doing. Be afraid.

    And therein lies the problem.
