check the serial port option in the system settings. I cant remember off hand if it needed to be checked or unchecked. One way its being used for debug by the kernel and the other way its a normal serial port for use by programs.
Just thought I would post my findings to help others.
I was trying to get a phoenix to work with a new dm500 with gemini4.2,
and couldnt get it working.
When I flashed it with the gemini 3.6 image it worked perfectly.
Serial port was enabled with both images, and the same newcs file was used.

What would you do if your server was stolen or failed beyond repair?

Does he not say the serial was enabled

sorry z80,
but i had major pixelation actually major freezing like 10 to 20 sec's with gemini 4.20 & ccam 2.04 & resorted back to gemini 4.10 & ccam 2.04 and its been working perfect you must have the magic touch or special settings care to share
Chieflets
I flashed each image and only did a backup restore for each image.Using the backup from the image which was working ok on the server(3.6gemini)
I suppose perhaps the 4.2 might have been" faulty?"
I will try it again later this week.
I thought I was going nuts because the other dm500 (server ) would work ok with the same config but was using 3.6 gemini.
BTW the serial port option in the system settings needs to be checked.
Thanks Jgarg for sharing your experience.
I have been trying very hard for a while to get a Phoenix working off my DM500 using Gemini 3.6 with no luck. This post may have shed some light on what my problem might be.
1. I am unable to find the serial port option in the system settings to "tick" or enable so to speak. From the setup/system settings I only have time, A/V, Keyboard setup, & OSD settings.
Does anyone know why this would be?
2. On another note I am also wondering what the correct line entries of the working newcs.xml file for the Phoenix reader are so I can check with what I have been trying to use.
I have pasted in line entries of what I have been using below.
Any feedback of what might be wrong (if this is the case) will be greatly appreciated.

These files will work in any dreambox with any image you like.
All slots are enabled with different newcamd port numbers, so you can have three cards shared at once. Good luck finding three providers though...
Austar or NDS card in any slot at the front, gamma in a phoenix at the rear.
It looks like I still have problem.
I carefully tried z80s configs on the newcs and CCcam files and still have not been able to get the serial/Phoenix port working.
Will try supermega's config probably on the weekend. I noticed that supermega has the speed on the phoenix port set to 3.58Mhz. For the DM500 is this critical or can I choose either switching the link Phoenix to suit. I am sure I have read that the DM500 serial phoenix port can only work at 3.58Mhz
If it is not this I believe either my phoenix reader is not suitable/compatible or the serial port on the DM500s might be a problem. BTW I bought the Phoenix reader/programmer form Sattronics and it works fine with NewCS on a Win XP PC.
z80 & supermega
What versions of NewCS and CCcam are you using?
Thankyou so much Supermega and z80.
Will try this as soon as I can.
Does anyone know about the issue of needing to select or enable the serial port from the system setup menu?
Just checked again and I have found that Gemmini 3.6 has is a serial port option in the setup menu - Mine actually says "Dont open serial port" which is default (unselected) hence already enabled
Thanks Again
I am repeating this quote as it seems as the time on this Austech site is still out (obviously due to the major outage recently.. and fair enough) this reply "went back in time" so to speak and placed it in the wrong order.
I would still like to hear from anyone how would be kind enough to reply. Thanks
your serial cable should be straight through...pin for pin.
Thanks z80
The cable is OK Pin for Pin like you say - it also works along with the Phoenix reader when I use it with NewcS on my Win XP PC.
Will do more setups and testing soon.
On another point I am a bit suspicious about which setting to put the system settings serial port - the "don't open serial port" need to be ticked or not.
For a learner like me I would say no - what do other users have set out there?
I will probably try both settings if I do not hear from anyone in this post soon.
Yaa Hoo - SUCCESS
I have it working.
Serial with Phoenix/Whitey & Internal card slot with an NDS card
The system settings serial port - "don't open serial port" needed to be ticked which was obviously a major problem.
I have used z80s config files with my own user names & passwords
Thankyou so much z80 and supermega and everyone that provided feedback.
Will now move to my next challenge, i.e. a second box to do the card share stuff over my home lan.
congratulation checkitout
hhahahahah
very hard working.....
good
Could someone plz test there port with a cas3+ in phoenix mode and a whitey. Cause as I think my port does not work and I cannot justify buying a mk2 programmer just to test my dreamboxes port. Thanks
