have you tried to start it in safe mode ?? ie hit F8 continually from power up till you get the options to start in safe mode.

yes ive been loading it on few amds without problem so far, it seems to be more with famous brand name pc's lol.

best bet for all would be to use Jesters "small tool" as he called it to check out your position before installing sp3

im guessing its more when you run sp3 as a upgrade rather than installing as a xp intergrated and a clean install
im not a fan of "install over the top" or hit R for repair(i can never get it to work)
for few hours of your time, a quick backup - format - install does wonders.
i removed nvidia driver nvgts.sys which is causing asus owners bsod's + others lots probs atm, then booted and realized i have all sata drives?
umm, thank god for ubuntu lol.

Slightly off topic Phill, but I recently installed a couple of sata drives on the missus's newly built dual core PC. The Asus bios had option to change hard drive detection to IDE mode and I didn't have to do the old F6 and usb floppy trick.

Do you know if this has any impact on hard drive or system performance as she has 2x500 gig Sata's in there? (likes her music etc.....)

cant be positive but think sata has better transfer rate.
i install new sata drives on pc's and never need "added sata drivers"
i have noticed if 2 drives are hooked up, silly windoz says about putting files on 2nd drive, needs formatting blaa blaa,
think its best to install with 1 drive, then add other later.
sp3 is causing sata probs from its "performance driver"
a sp2 install, run sp3 as upgrade is probably a good idea.
you can remove it if needed.
