What is the remote used for mate
Any hobbyists interested in trying to fix a Teac RC-616 remote control for me?
It suddenly just stopped transmitting a signal.
Happy to pay or do a deal on a computer item.

What is the remote used for mate
When you do things right, people won't be sure that you have done anything at all
It's for a 15" colour TV
Have you got a soldering iron

If you can part the 2 halves of the remote control unit without destroying it,The fault is often repaired by cleaning the touch pads with metho.
If they look perfect then perhaps dry joint on the xtal or on the led.
You have to diagnose what is wrong with the remote 1st
is the batteries any good or corroded
does it partly work like some of the buttons work
Have you got a video camera if you point a remote at it and push the buttons you can see the remotes IR working little flashing red light on the end of it which is invisible to the naked eye
Find a old remote you can use for spares and pull that apart for practice
before you pull your good one apart
Take batteries out make sure there are no screws in the remote and
snap it apart slowly with a thin knife on both sides (take notice of how to put it back together)
Once you have it apart there are only a couple of things that stuff up in a remote
If you have a meter just check to see if there is continuity from the battery
springs to the circuit board
Broken Ceramic Resonator it is usually a small blue or orange component with
a 455 kHz printed on it and has 2 legs and is glued to the circuit board circuit board reference number is normally X1 or CR1. Just replace this
I normally test it here and see if that fixed the problem
IR led when replacing that take note of which way it goes in (Look inside of the led and you can see the difference i am talking about)
The rest are normally caused by battery leakage or people spilling drinks on them where the circuit board just needs a good clean.
Word of wanning the key pad has little black conductive paint on them
DON'T go scrubbing that off
Have fun

First up, Thanks for the help with this guys.
To answer your questions best4less.
The unit has no sign of corrosion, and batteries are good.
I put a meter on the board and the circuit seems good.
I tested the unit against my Panasonic HD Set top box as it indicates IR with a red flashing light from any source, so I know that its not just a few keys, but the entire unit that's dead.
Pads are clean, so no problem here.
You mention the Ceramic Resonator. Is there a way of testing it, or is it just easier to replace?
BTW. Don't know if this is of importance, but the unit was working fine and just suddenly stopped a couple of minutes after I last used it.
mate i am sure it will be either the led or the Ceramic Resonator
i would just replace the Ceramic Resonator easy enough only 2 legs
and cause the most trouble as the break so easy when you
drop the remote, and is enough to tell they rattle most of the time
when there broken

Thanks.
One last question. Would Jaycar be the best place to get one? If so, do they go by another name, as I can't find it listed in their cattle dog.
You must have a old remote lying around from a TV VCR DVD Radio Blah Blah ..

m8, grab your mobile phone and put it in camera mode, point the remote at the camera and press any buttons, u can actually see it like a white led if u view it with a camera. prety neat trick to proove weather its the remote or the tv at fault. i use this method all the time when i suspect dead batteries. works every time
I would still check it with a video or any digital camera to see if it is working but this can still be misleading because some blink but don't have the coded information and this is often because of a broken track. Some remotes support the PCB on legs and if someone sits on it then the board bends and the tracks break and this is extremely difficult to detect with the naked eye. Some tracks crack around the solder at the led pads and this is also very hard to see.
As said, the resonator is also a prime suspect but look for any change in colour along the length of the tracks as some stuff spilt on the remote can leave very little residue but corrodes the track away under the lacquer but still looks ok. The led can usually be tested with an ohms meter and verified further by looking at it with a camera.
The battery contacts are often difficult to solder and can be dry and loose in the board.
If you are ever trying to get a remote apart then remove any screws and first try to slide the two sections before attempting to lever it and snapping the lugs off. The TEAC RC-773 two halves slides about a 1/4" and then falls apart.
If all else fails then a cheap universal remote should work.
Thanks everyone for your help with this.
I found an old remote today and replaced the Ceramic Resonator and tested the unit, with no luck.
Next I replaced the IR Led, and the unit now works (although the signal strength isn't anywhere that of what it used to be). I'm not complaining though, just happy to have it working again.
I can fix remotes. woohoo, who would have guessed.
Thanks again everyone
Its good to get a win every now and then

Good tutorial B4L.
Might send all ours up your way
