VAST PVR Remote & HDD Compatability
I've had the opportunity to test a couple of things, which may answer some questions previously asked.
The PVR remote control works with other PVR-enabled VAST decoders, as does the external HDD.
A HDD can be swapped between PVR boxes, both for recording and playback.
Eg: you can move the HDD from one PVR VAST decoder and play back recordings on a different PVR box.
You can also add recordings to the HDD on a different VAST deocoder.
So the 'pairing' of the PVR remote and HDD doesn't seem to be as restrictive as initially thought.

Only Externally powered hard drives are recommended/supported by the Vast DSD4121 PVR STB
A list of Hard drives that I have found that work so far are:
1. Buffalo 1TB (USB 2.0 externally Powered)
2. Western Digital Elements 1TB (USB 2.0 externally Powered)
3. Western Digital Elements 2TB (USB 2.0 externally Powered) NOTE: that only a maximum of 1TB of it is used by Vast STB
3. Seagate (GoFlex Desk) 1TB (USB 2.0 externally Powered)
It may also be useful to list any Hard drives that do not work well with the Vast PVR STB

I have also heard one report that the Logitech Harmony 300i remote may work with the Vast DSD4121 PVR STB ....?

Has anyone been able to test a USB thumb drive, just to see if it works with no external power?
I've tested Transcend 4GB USB 2.0 and Patriot 32GB USB 3.0 pen drives, both work fine... however... they are very warm in use, which suggests they are working under load drawing current the boxes power supply may be struggling to keep up with.Originally Posted by newy1234
On that basis, I would agree that the best option is to use external power for any USB devices.
An externally-powered USB hub would probably be OK if you used USB pen drives and naturally... externally powered USB HDD's.

Can the recorded TV show be copied to a PC, if so, what format is the file?
EG: I want to record a show using my VAST, copy the file from the VAST-HDD to my PC and then edit that file on my PC. Can that be done?

No, the format of the drive is VAST native, your PC won't be able to read it.
I do however remember Smacca mentioning somewhere on this forum that it may be possible with some very expensive software.

Although no USB sticks are supported, mtv has tested a few see post #5 above.
Similar for Western Digital Hard drives OSIRUS in post #2 has some working.
Would be good to hear how well they work from others that have been using them.
I know of one member, toyboy11, who posted this in another thread "So have I. But I also asked UEC about that fact that these Drives wont go to sleep, you have to leave them running day in and day out they said that was normal, well it's not to me as I have the same model Drive connected to my mediastar and that does go to sleep when not in use."

I have an 80GB HP personal HDD unpowered but uese a 'Y" connector cable with TWO USB connectors on one end and I was told this was aimed at Laptops as they often have low current USB output and this 'shares' the current load.
So my question is, could I connect ONE USB connector to a STB like VAST and the other to a USB/Mains plugpack?
I dont care if this HP HDD is compatible with VAST or not but would this idea work ?

It's still likely to draw current from the decoder's power supply, of which that supply is not designed to do.
Also, those devices are expected to 'see' power from the same power supply, not some power from one internal supply from the device and some power from an external device.
As those adaptors are just paralleled, power from the external supply will also be fed back into the decoder supply..... doing so is risky, so you'd be taking a gamble of doing damage to the decoder and/or the HDD.

The only feature I may want to access is the 'Find the Satellite' should I ever try to set up a VAST stb cold and I have read it but I intend to print out MTV's tutorial on that.

Make sure it has the PVR update before you run the Tutorial.
Now thats an interesting dilema..................
If you had a STB straight out of the box thats not been Updated and the dish hasnt been set up before you cant do the 'Find the Satellite' can you as the feaure isnt installed untill it is downloaded.
The moral of that is you need to get the box both authorised and upgraded before embarking on a totaly new install as you do when Traveling each time you stop.
Of course untill now VAST 'Travelers' have managed without that feature as no doubt have a few that have done self install VAST jobs.

Well that's life these days same as when you by a new computer etc the first thing you need to do is check for updates.
Anyway you do it however you like, i guess like most have done. Or buy a PVR box straight off where that feature has already been installed.

Of course once the Update is installed your away from then on with using the 'Sat Finder' feature if your a 'Traveler' but you wouldnt want to be a 'First Timer' thinking this is all ready to go and try to use it, that could rather spoil your day somewhat.
