DAS Hills Comnav
Hey Guys,
Has anyone here had any success using the comnav for email? I've installed around 20 or so and have spoken to RoDas a few times, but as yet have not been able to send a single bloody email?
I've 910ed it and tried entering the name of the SMTP server, as well as the IP address of the SMTP server.
The only thing I can find, (which I'm not really sure) is that when you look at the port in the HTML for the email page, it's missing quotation marks.
I had a friend, who's a bigger geek than me have a look. He's directed the traffic to a device on his network to monitor port traffic and couldn't get a damn thing out of it.
Also, our control room mentioned that they haven't had much luck with the Comnav, yet they too have had success with the NX-590s that DAS used to sell.
Any pointers/info would be awesome.... Thanks,
Andrew

If it is on a network, you should be able to ping it. If it's there it will reply. Try that first, then you will know where to jump!

I remember something about the name of the server had to be capital letters? DAS techsupport on 1800 252 213 would know.

Yeah, hound dog...tried pinging it, and it pings fine. tried the capital letter deal on the smtp server address. Also tried tech support, and that was useless. The only thing they could suggest was making sure port 25 was forwarded on each router. Didn't think this would help, but tried it anyway. Still not a damn thing sent or received.
Surely there must be someone who has had this product working with email?

Email reporting for me worked quite simply out of the box.
I changed nothing in my modem/router or firewall
I just plugged my comnav in, assigned it a IP via Module No: 191
Feature 19: Left as default
Feature 20: Default Gateway
Feature 21: Ip Address
Feature 22: subnet mask
Feature 23: DNS Server 1 address
accessed the through a web browser and changed the email reporting options as below
I am using westnet as my ip service provider
SMTP Server: mail.westnet.com.au Port: 25
Use SSL: not ticked
User Name: my_internet_useraccount
Password: my_internet_password
Return Address: something@westnet.com.au
Email 1 Address: reportshere@westnet.com.au
email reports worked first go, no problem

ComNav Dissapointing
I too am having problems with the ComNav sending email reporting. I have checked settings multiple times and am almost convinced that it is a piece of ....
1. Can connect via network to the ComNav web server.
2. All network settings confirmed as correct.
3. Email settings correct (tried upper and lower case as suggested by others).
4. My router shows no evidence that the ComNav is even trying to send anything out.
Does anyone know about newer software for the ComNav or how to get lower level diagnostics out of the module.
Failing that, Can anyone recommend an IP module that works with the Hills Reliance 12
Cheers.

Questions
Are you using your Internet provider smtp server or your own in-house server.
I will check some other features on my comnav and get back to you.

The settings you exetel smtp server is
Username: yourmailbox@exemail.com.au (NOT @exeTEL.com.au)
Password: yourpassword
Outgoing Mail server: smtp.[state].exemail.com.au
Outgoing Mail Port: 25
SSL: Off

The IP address is set statically.
Settings are correct (can get the web server... and the webserver gets logs from the panel)
I am more across networks than alarms.
Wrong subnet would prevent me from accessing the webserver of the comnav
wrong mail server or DNS should still show something in the router logs.
No ssl on email settings for email reports.
I have tried the SMTP address as both
SMTP.NSW.EXEMAIL.COM.AU and smtp.nsw.exemail.com.au (as per someone's earlier suggestion).
I'll try full authentication on the mail server and see what happens, although my mail server doesn't require it when on their network.

I know its obvious, but you mention nothing about gateway settings.
Hopefully this is correct.
I would try DHCP just out of curiousity sake.

Yeah forgot to mention the gateway but yes it is right.
I changed to DHCP just to check whether it is something to do with it.
I saw in my router logs it grabbing a DHCP address.
Turned alarm on/off and still no joy.
I am not real confident it is trying to communicate.
I changed feature 6 to 1. This was a communicator thing.
I don't believe that would be necessary but just in case.
I don't have a phone line plugged in so I guess that's why I am now getting communications errors on the keypad.
But can still see the comnav webserver and all the events.
Are there any other areas that might be stopping this on the panel? I followed your suggestions before, but no success in getting it working.

The Email addresses you trying to send to are different to your return address.
I know this doesnt make any difference on mine (westnet) but exetel might be different.
Disable router/modem firewall make any difference?
I'm running out of ideas at the moment, because I done quite a few of these with no problems.

The return email is the same.
No outgoing firewall.
I will plug directly into the modem, just to bypass main router, but my gut is the panel is not right.
I am going to put a packet analyser on it.
I am very skeptical it is sending any packets at all.
Do you need any other setting to get these things going?

Ok, reset to factory default the ComNav module (incase) its brains were scrambled.
Rechecked panel settings for reporting in Feature 9, 16, 22.
Still up the creek with out a paddle.
Obviously haven't seen in the docco where it says the option for 'make it work'vb

Multiple emails sent from ComNav
Has anyone else had this problem or know what is causing it?
More Detail
When the ComNav sends emails it sends FOUR emails if tripped by a WIRED PIR and about THIRTY if tripped by a WIRELESS PIR.
Is there a setting in the panel (its an R12) for the PIR zones that could be causing this?
FYIs:
1) The ComNav counts as an expansion card so if you also have a wireless ITI card installed in an NX8 it won't work as the ITI card is also an expansion card and the NX8 can only have 1. My local support guys weren't aware of this so I was pulling out my hair until I upgraded to a R12.
2) For others having struggling with ComNav - mine is working fine using gmail as SMTP server (except for the multiple email issue) so I thought I'd post my revisions below in case it may be of some use:
Firmware: 0.60
Hardware: 0.0
Web Version: 0.57
Voice: 0.5
Language: 0
Thanks

Nigeltec,
I have the R12 so didn't encounter that problem.
I am going to do some network analysis of my panel tonight to determine if it is even trying to talk or not.
Are there any software upgrades for panel or ComNav?

So now I am even more confused.
The email reporting started working (When I enter program mode on the panel, which I may not have done previously when the network was all setup, but pretty sure I would have), however... it only works when i enter and exit program mode. Not for setting/cancelling alarm.
It send to the two email address even though one has nothing selected.
One email - everything selected
other email - nothing selected
So it appears that the panel is not really caring too much about what is selected at all in the web interface for comnav.
I was going to try check what email reports are setup in the panel itself (to double check) but they are via web interface only.
Perhaps it is just me but this is a pretty flakey piece of kit.

What firmware version is on your ComNav?
If its older than mine (v0.60) then perhaps it could be a firmware problem.
DAS support told me their ComNav was running a newer version than my v0.60 (I bought mine is Sept 2011). It would be very helpful if we could get access to each FW version's bug fixes so we would know wether or not the FW is responsible for our particular problems.

so how did you update the firmware? I have .60
When I enable the web updates which quotes ftp, there is no change in open ports.
There is no instruction in installation manual on firmware upgrades.
