Default Humax 5400 - no Sig Quality??

    Hi Guys,
I've been trying to re-vitalise an old humie. This one flashed ok, shows plenty of signal, but shows no quality. I replaced the tuner can - same problem. Has anyone encountered one of these??

it is something else other than psu with both mine as i have tested with 4 working psu's and 1 of wich is a brand new one that i have as a test to see if there are issues with psu supply.

i have replaced both tuners and tested caps around the tuner area on the board as well as the zener just beside it.

now they are both just for parts.

I have the same problem with mine sometime ago and what I did then was do a firmware update but make sure it's the correct F/W. check the STB system ID is the same as the new F/W

A bit of light reading for you from a fellow called carnage it might help you.
    Pasted as i copied it
Could be worth checking out if you have flashed and no longer get quality.

    Humax 5400z+ (plus)
    Hi all J,let’s talk about 5400z+ receiver………..
This subject could be apparently easy to understand, but I found many not
so clear points when I approached it…..
From my little experience, I found that 5400z+ models could be identified
    in 3 principal types:
    MODEL TUNER System Id LOADER
    IRCI 5400z+ SD1278 LVA-3 0016.0600 H2.08
    IRCI 5400z+ SD1278 LVA-3 Unknown 3.2 43
    IRCI 5400z+ SD1278 LVA-3 0016.0601 H2.19
Main differences between IRCI 5400(z) and IRCI 5400z+:
The most important difference, is an hardware one, in detail the tuner is
    different;in fact, while IRCI 5400 e 5400z models have MK2 and MK3
    tuner,( see table below ):
    MODEL TUNER System Id LOADER
    OAK-I MK2 0016.0000 L 1.37
    OAK-II MK2 0016.0200 L 2.08
    OAK-I MK3 0016.0400 H 1.37
    OAK-II MK3 0016.0600 H 2.08
    IRCI 5400z+ have SD1278 LVA-3 tuner
    MODELLO TUNER System Id LOADER
    IRCI 5400z+ SD1278 LVA-3 ? ?
Let's have a look one at a time at the 3 mentioned models,
making appropriate considerations about problems and
    possibile solutions:
    1. IRCI 5400z+ loader H2.08 SyID 0016.0600
Theese receivers are sold with up mentioned hardware configuraion.
Q: Can I upload on my STB a ToH3.3HoTx.x FW, without having
    problems?
A: NO you can’t, because ToH3.3 HoTx.x FW are made ONLY for
IRCI 5400(z) models with tuner MK2 or MK3.
So you need a ToH_HoT FW for your own TUNER.
    Advice:
    1° DON’T MODIFY YOUR LOADER!
2° Download on your 5400z+ the following Sy. Ident = 0016.0601.
(you can charge it as a normal FW (*.hdf), for example with
HDFSmart latest version, tool by nostromo)
This is done ‘cause, once you changed the SyID into 0016.0601 one,
you will not encounter errors if you try to download a ToH_HoT FW
for receivers that have different tuner from your own.
3° Now, if you have the correct hardware requirements, you can, also by
yourself, modify a ToH_HoT FW and make it for your 5400z+.
In fact, thanks to the fantastic tool "5400Z_Plus_Builder_V20" or
newer versions, coded by CrazySat, it is very easy to trasform a
ToH_HoT FW into a ToH_HoT one tailored for your 5400z+:
    · Download “5400Z_Plus_Builder_V20”(or latest V24) zip file
    and extract it;
    · Put any ToH3.3 HoTx.x FW into 5400Z_Plus_Builder folder
    you created from extraction;
    · Launch “runme.bat” file;
    · Send to your 5400z+ the new hdf file named
    “ToH_5400Z_Plus.hdf”,using for example HDFSmart 1.7.
    2. IRCI 5400z+ loader 3.2 43 SyID Unknown
This kind of receiver is sold as is, with ZIC Firmware.
This 5400z+, with upon features is, LOCKED (as we can say);in fact
before any further upgrade, you must change original boot loader 3.2 43
into H2.19 one, and you MUST change System Ident into 0016.0601.
So we will reach an hardware configuration similar to the following one.
    3. IRCI 5400z+ loader H2.19 SyID 0016.0601
With these HW configs, your 5400z+ doesn’t need any kind of HW
    modification.
To upgrade the FW of your receiver, as I said before, you have 2 possible
    choices:
    · Download on your IRCI 5400z+ ToH_HoT FW you can find in the
    net, ONLY FOR 5400z+;
    · Convert a ToH3.3_HoTx.x FW using CrazySat’s tool
    “5400Z_Plus_Builder” ( see procedure explained before ).
    Notes:
I give you an advice: don’t use “5400Z_Plus_Builder_V20” with win 98,
because I found some errors in creation of the new FW for 5400z+.
    Conclusions:
5400z+ models I tried to describe upon, come out from producer with ZIC
FW on board, with serial port locked and with Boot Loader 3.2 43.
The differences between loaders and System Idents, mean that an expert
    “patcher man” changed them.
    Special Thanks:
Since I don’t have this kind of receiver J , I’d like to make clear the info
    upon it.
I want to thanks CrazySat and humax-zone.net guys, for help, technical
support and detailed analisys that born in many posts about 5400z+.
Thanks to Miciobao, for sustaining me.
Thanks goes to GoZosat staff, ‘cause they show me a lot. So I want to
dedicate this little doc to them.
Thanks to Franck Mackey for many talks…J
Thanks to all users with humax 5400z+; with their questions I learnt a lot
of new things about this receiver.
Many thanks also to lucky65…my “English Supervisor Friend” J

    thanks pieces

    the steps i have taken

1: replaced caps on psu = same issue
2: installed brand new psu = same issue
3: cleared all memory maps etc then rescan = no scan error
4: sent new map from another reciever = same issue
5: d-zeded unit and flashed with original firmware = same issue
6: replaced tuner with matching model = same issue
7: checked caps within immediate area of tuner = same issue
8: tested cable with another receiver = working perfect
9: dual lnb is working perfectly
10: multi switch is working perfectly
11: no joins what so ever from multi switch to wall plate as i installed it all myself all with compression crimps etc

conclusion = old age caught up with them.I have had alot of experience with these units and work on them a fair bit

this problem can be solved by updating the humie with setting file in HDF extension and having system ID (0000.0000-FFFF.FFFF)
