Microsoft Security Essentials.
+1 for MSE..... (as he wipes tears from eyes!!!!!) oh the pain of saying it....
If you feed ducks at a pond, chances are your bound to feed a goose or two without even knowing it.
Yeah, I'm with Zig & DB as well,.......... I'm now just going to go and wash my mouth out
In hindsight I should have posted my Facebook status as: "I've blown the head gasket on my 1997 XR3i" rather than "I've just buggered a 14 year old escort".
The police still haven't seen the funny side, my lap top's been confiscated and the wife has gone off to her mum's.
+3 msse

Statistically, if you wait long enough, everything will happen!
Avast Antivirus
Old Dog, No Flies
Personally I think you get what you pay for. But as mentioned, Microsoft Security Essentials is probably the pick of the bunch for a freebie.
Its also worth noting that you can buy a subscription for a quality product such as Kaspersky on ebay.com or .co.uk very cheaply.
+ 4 or is it 5 for MSE but also get malwarebytes free download the two work well together. haven't had a problem since using it.
Been using AVG Free for the last 5 years (and installing it on clients' computers) and touch wood, so far - NO PROBLEMS!
I like how it sits quietly in the corner and doesn't make a nuisance of itself until there really is an issue.
MSE is the only way to go for free malware protection.
The other three main ones namely AVG Avast and Antivir, miss too much stuff and when malware is finally detected it's usually well after the computer was first infected. The other problem with these three is the size of the install, simply called bloatware. Even the initial installers are huge 70-150mb's in size.

Is interesting to see the significant support for a microsoft product (given the general dislike of everything else they make).
Must be good
Credit where credit is due, even if it hurts sometimes.
Easy....Install and use a ' Linux ' OS and enjoy a virus free, crash free, spyware free experience.
.
Ubuntu or better still KUbuntu might be the best Linux OS to install for someone migrating from the evil MS disease known as winbloze.
.
If you have lots of money, then an Apple Mac is another alternative.
.
But, if you really have to stay on the evil side then, No there is no free lunch but up there at the top is Kasperskey and Eset Nod32.
.
The well advertised N_ _ _ _ and M_ _ _ _ and the selection of free pretend anti virus software available, well they are not worth the risk, ie: not reliable.
.
I say install Linux for your safety and for your sanity.

ESET . . . . but definitely not an Apple or Mac!
the threads alive! after 1 yr & 10 months
i been doing some tests as late
always been a nod32 man but lately its caused problems not just on mine but others i know (hacked versions only)
so i read, & read, and found of the free jobs av antivirus, avast, agv were of the best
but as for light, i have gone with bit defender free, runs very, very quiet in the background, picks up the cracks & hacks if you open them
no stupid 100 settings to confuse you, im happy
try it out
