Would I be correcting in presuming this OTA update will remain avialable for some time as there must be a number of STB's still on the shelf at retailers and what about those to be sold by UEC, will they require the OTA update after purchase or will UEC sell them already enabled ?

So have I. But I also asked EUC about that fact that these Drives wont go to sleep you have to leave them running day in and day out they said that was normal, well it's not to me as i have the same model Drive connected to my mediastar and that does go to sleep when not in use.

I posted a post on this some time back , can't remember now.

What I would like to know is there anybody else out there that's got a HDD that UEC recommend that actually go to sleep after a recording

I'm unhappy because they could have told people this long ago, as it is me that's stuck with yet another HDD, Yeah Sell it you say.

    End of Rant.

After exploring the website it appears to be a front for UEC.
The products are listed with no pricing, they do however under contact them give you a phone number Ph 02 94255777 & email address sales@uec.com.au which by its name infers you can buy direct from them.

I've searched around & cant find the PVR ready Upgrade Kit (remote control) at any online sat stores, have emailed a couple (no response yet), so I'm going to try UEC direct & see what happens

You are right the Mediastar HDX9100 completely turns off the Hard drive, (light & all) within a short time of putting the STB into Standby, & turns it back on again within a short time of starting the STB from standby (light & all) & this happens on any Hard drive, I've used.

I have not found a hard drive (yet) that the UEC turns off completely, light & all

I have found that after putting the STB into Standby it takes up to 20 minutes or so, & then the Hard drive spins down to power saving mode....but the light stays on

The only way I can tell it has spun down to power saving mode is by putting my hand on the HDD & feel for vibration ....(or not), or by putting my ear to it

I think I remember someone saying ....it does "maintenance procedures" while it is still turned on, to the hard drive

I think the UEC is designed this way ATM

I personally like the Seagate 1TB "Go Flex Desk" USB externally Powered HDD (looks like the one in the Video...above)

    just my oppinion

Edit: After the HDD has spun down to Power saving mode, I personally turn the HDD off at the Power Point until I want to use the HDD again.....

    Default Warning

This is a copy of an email sent back to me regarding the Western Digital Elements Drive from UEC.

Now, out comes the PVR update along with a list of prefered HDD and guess what the Western Digital Drive has been given the flick, bit rude i recon ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU CAN PRESET THE RECORDING TO START EARLIER.

    Dated March 1/2012

Oh, sorry didn’t realise that I didn’t get back to you on that. The hard drive continues to spin in case there are any booked programs set for record, if the hard drive isn’t spinning it will take anywhere up to 30seconds for a recording to start which can cause errors with the hard drive. It will not impact the drive in any negative way as drive wear takes place when a hard drive is constantly turning on then off. We will however be adding a option to turn the hard drive off in standby in the next software update.

So i ask again is there anybody out there that has one of the UEC prefered HDD that will switch of when the stb goes into standby

I did find the Buffalo HDD would not spin down.....for me.....

(maybe I didn't give it long enough to go into Power saving mode)

If you go into menu and scroll down to advanced then click on and then go to DSD update and press ok, sit back and let it do it.

If the DSD Update field is greyed out and you can't select it... it means you already have the latest-available update installed.

I have already done the update manualy after I saw the posting here but I asked, was it to happen automaticaly or purely a User choice as I had to do it manualy on both STB's.
The update option is now 'Greyed out'.
I installed one for a neighbour 3 weeks ago which is another reason I asked about the update.

    Usually automatically.

If a box is switched off at the time automatic updates run, it will be missed and need to be performed manually.
