The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) will receive new funding to ensure that an estimated 10 million Australians in regional, rural and remote areas have access to improved ABC radio services.
ABC radio listeners outside major metropolitan coverage areas currently rely on signals sourced from the Optus Aurora satellite, which will finish after analog television services cease at the end of 2013.
This new funding will ensure the transition of radio services to the Government-funded Viewer Access Satellite Television (VAST) satellite platform on completion of the switchover to digital only television across Australia. The VAST service will then become the source for the ABC terrestrial radio services.
“This new funding will ensure that millions of Australians retain access to critically important ABC radio services that they rely on for news, current affairs, sport and entertainment,” Senator Conroy said.
“Users of VAST “direct-to-home” satellite receivers will also benefit because VAST will carry the ABC’s digital-only radio channels Dig, ABC Country, ABC Jazz, ABC Grandstand and triple J unearthed.”
VAST will also carry the Tasmania Local Radio service for the first time, as well as enable an additional local radio service to be transmitted terrestrially in regional Queensland.
NITV will also be available via SBS terrestrial FTA

I dont know about elsewhere but SBS Terrestial has 5 'channels' here and 3 of them are just a duplicate of each others so no problems adding NITV to the line up, they could even put Al Jazerra or the 'Community Channel in there too.
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!
Putting NITV on the SBS mux is a very logical step forward. Something that needs to be done nationally!
Those other SBS' are fake, gordon. They all point to the same stream (SBS ONE SD). SBS is as bandwidth-starved as the rest of the networks, so NITV will look almost as bad as ABC3, 4ME and Gold (but SBS HD being a lower res will probably work in NITV's favour).
I wonder what LCN will be given to NITV? Seems like the 4XX's are already allocated. Maybe 33?
33 is the best bet i agree.
This does leave the community station in an interesting spot though in major capitals. Will they try and squeeze them in too!?
Or will it end up taking up the 6th post-restack channel allocation, ruining much hope of other providers being able to broadcast in the future.
Interesting stuff, I did not know NITV even existed! Where is NITV currently broadcast?
It would be good to see the community channel 44 in Sydney or 31 in Melbourne on Vast I watch 5 or 6 shows a week on my community channel.
FTA off Optus C1 satellite 12526 V

NITV reaches its audiences through a variety of means:
Free-to-air
Terrestrial analog Channel 35 Mt. Isa; Terrestrial analog channel 60 Bourke; Terrestrial analog channel 34 Alice Springs;
Terrestrial analog in 147 Remote Indigenous Communities in remote Australia and
Satellite digital direct to home
Channel 180 everywhere Foxtel, Austar and Optus;
Channel 6 on the basic tier of Neighborhood Cable in Geelong, Ballarat and Mildura; and
Channel 502 on the basic tier of TransACT’s TransTV in Canberra.
Parliament House, Canberra
There is also speculation of capital city community TV stations being carried on the SBS mux as SBS will move from UHF to VHF in metro areas in 2014.
Community TV also transmits on UHF and there has not been a decision made yet where those stations will transmit after the channel 'restack'.
If CTV is carried by SBS terrestrial, they will most likely be available on VAST at some time in the future.

Unless they leave NITV as the 'last channel surviving' on Aurora when it closes in time, its logical (????) to include it into VAST either as a 'stand alone' channel or in the SBS lineup or its viewers will have to keep their current Aurora STB's connected as you cant tune the VAST stb to receive it.

Gordon, there's no 'or' about it... NITV is going to be carried on SBS, both terrestrially and on VAST.
With Aurora closing down, there is no point doubling up.
Do you really think the government would pay two fees to Optus to maintain a separate satellite service for NITV in addition to VAST?
I don't think so.
No MTV, I wasnt questioning your posting at all as thats the most sensible thing to do with NITV and add all the ABC/SBS radio onto VAST eventualy and allow the 'Aurora' service as we know it today to fade away.
As Mr spock would say it isnt 'Logical' to leave it by itself.
But MTV, I REALLLY do have to ask you to SERIOUSLY consider giving the 'Gubberment' any credit for having sense not to pay 2 fees based on our recent experiences with the Digital Terrestial and VAST implementation programs.
PS/ we wont mention the 'Pink' batts and Solar energy debacles, will we???

It looks like they're launching these services on Tuesday, according to updated Ch 800 information.

WOW !!! Channel 800 with information, what is the world comming too..............
There is no reason they couldnt do as smacca suggests but I feel its a bit early just yet but, come Wednesday morning all will be revealed.
However if you read MTV's earlier post of a report that infers that these services will remain on Aurora untill 'the analog service ceases at the end of 2013'.

Crazy how under-utilised Ch 800 is. I'm surprised Aurora's tuning and info channel doesn't mention anything about the switch off or the existence of VAST. Hasn't changed for about 4 or 5 years I think.
Ya never know. RHC and Ch 801 just popped up out of nowhere.
Are you saying it could be until after 2013 before new ABC radio services are added to VAST?
