Default Playing content from VAST UEC DSD 4121.

A member has asked me to post this link to a 'tutorial' for those who want to view the content from the VAST HDD on to a computer.
The member didnt want to post this personaly but I thought it maybe of use to others so I have posted it on his behalf.
If you have any questions, you'll have to wait untill the member reads them as this is well out of my league and PM's any replies to me to answer them for you so dont expect a quick answers.

PS/ If this works for you and you can make use of it, please DO NOT THANK ME for it as I am NOT the origonater of it and I think it would be inappropriate to accept thanks for anothers contribution.

I'll give it a try when I have a chance.

I don't see the need for all the secrecy and double-handling though.

Many Thanks to your Mate, Gordon

Where I am trying to change it to an .avi file

    I am getting an error?

    SSE supported but disabled
    SSE2 supported but disabled
    Video: Cannot read properties.

(the result is the file is still a .rec & not an .avi file)

I must be doing something wrong here....... (still trying)

This is a Very Nice piece of Work, Many Thanks to the Author

I dont either but its the members choice and I was extremely flattered he chose me to pass it on even though I would have preffered he do so himself.
It was either this way or not at all and I thought others may benefit from his efforts so I couldnt be churlish and refuse could I?

He shouldnt be worried, theres no encryption being defeated by the looks of it. Its just accessing a VAST HDD using a linux filesystem and converting a file.

On a linux pc it'd be a simple as the appending the files to the original .rec and transcoding.

(I dont have a personal VAST box to confirm how well these instructions work btw)

Its no different then me accessing my PVR and moving some recordings to my pc, then transcoding to a different format.

Is the file a single file, or one that you've joined together, if so rejoin it, maybe wrong file order (the beginning of the file will need to have the others added to it in order).

This is the command I used to join the files

    D:\VAST>copy /b rec1_0.rec + /b rec1_1.rec /b news.rec

    to make news.rec

    cheers

Appears to be in order as per the instructions (copy is a windows command) - anyone know what the /b option does?.

Maybe the binary codecs will help:

Could be an issue with 64bit vs 32bit windows aswell

After the Great information above, making the Recorded Files available on you PC & being able to join the Files seemlessly into one file again....

    After some playing etc....

I have found that Quicktime Alternative 1.81 will play just about any Video from My Recordings (.rec) using the Classic Media Player on my computer (I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit)

I can't remember exactly what I did to make it work, I have installed a few Codec packs....until it worked....etc... (it will be different depending on your version of windows) have a play....

I think I installed one /or more of these: (among other codecs that may be installed on my computer)

    1. latest versions of K-Lite_Codec_Pack & latest update

    2. latest release of ffdshow....Codec Packs ...

For Editing Vast Recordings & changing to other Formats I am using AVS4YOU Video Converter...so far so good...(does everything so far)

I have not fully tested every output format..... but I have tested editing & conversion for YouTube & it seems to work OK

All I can say is it works for me.... & I don't want to uninstall everything to make a step by step guide .... so have a Play

(I also drag & drop the .rec file into the programs)

    Cheers

    Get Smart Intro

I would also suggest creating a system restore point on your Windows PC so you can easily get your PC back to the way it was if things go wrong....

you don't really need Quicktime Alternative 1.81, (as a viewer of the .rec files)

Just use a Video converter to change the file format from .rec to a file format for your media player etc....e.g .avi, .mp4 etc...

The best solution is if we can change the File format from .rec using the command prompt as Gordon's mate has described in his Tutorial

sorry if I have hijacked this thread.....
