Default Decoders that record closed captions

    Hi,
This is my 1st post, so if i am in the wrong place please advise.

Are there any "regular" decoders that can record closed captions?
I have both Strong 4663x and VAST boxes neither of which have this facility. As i have hearing difficulties (old age) CCs make viewing much easier.
Foreign films with translations are no problem

Im not aware of any that do [though this isnt a common request either!], you should be able to record the output (ie. AV out) of the box with CCs on, onto another device (VCR/DVD/HDD). That means though that the boxes must be on and watching the channel and CCs on, for CCs to be recorded.

Sorry I wasnt completely clear, you need an external recorder. This may be a VCR, DVD Recorder, HDD Recorder, or whatever else. Not the inbuilt USB HDD recording function on the STB.

    Thanks nbound.

Connected up an old VCR ($5 at local "transfer station" -TIP).
    All systems go.
Now I am in the market for an external HD/recorder with A/V input.
I noticed that a lot of PVRs now have USB input, and would have to also have separate A/V input

    Any suggestions?

Hoe, do you mean that you can record a program WITHOUT CC turned on and when you replay the program later , OPEN the CC function or must it be active during the record?
I know you can record CC with it turned on but I have never seen any mention on any form of recoder where that feature exists on 'Playback'.
I thought CC along with 'Freeze', PIP etc were only available 'On Screen' there and then.
I dont just mean on VAST, Terrestial or PayTV but the lot on ANY type of recoder, stand alone or built in, HDD,tape or Memory Stick.

Many DVD and DVD/HDD combo recorders have AV inputs.

They are much rarer on HDD only recorders. Though they do exist.

He is recording it onscreen only, if he is following my instructions

Edit: Only just noticed that gordon was talking to hoe, not RGS, my bad! :P

That is correct. Recording onscreen. I assume this means that the TV and recorder will keep going until I stop them. (At 4 am after a pit stop)

Yep, though you dont need the TV on, the VCR will happily record from the STB without it*. This will also let you hit the hay and not worry about power (VCR and STB use bugger all) if you want to record the late night boobies movies on SBS or something.

*Unless you are doing something uncommon like looping from the TVs AV out.

Stupid used the AV outs of a TV to record from as he was about to go to bed and promptly turned the TV off as he went, didnt he??
Next day on playback................ 2 wonderfull hours of a BLANK SCREEN !!!

Note to Stupid : When TV is turned off, AV OUTS are ALSO off.
The only mitigating excuse is that it was a reletively new TV and Stupid had never had one before with AV outs.

Currently using AV from the VAST decoder, not the TV.

Yep, Ultraplus 900HD does this. Don't even have to set it up. Records subtitles automatically. If you have latest software, you get to reboot it a few times a day too

Vu Duo does the same. I just called up a random recording and selected subtitle and it works no problem

He's (Messenger) posted a question in the VAST section asking about VAST approved receivers which will record closed captions, so I guess that is what he is referring to here.

'He' was maybe a little too succinct but I figured Bump meant I was resurrecting the thread - to ask the same Q as the OP
