Default Satellite Finder - Use your android phone

I found this little app which once installed on your Android phone gives you good help in setting up your dish.
I just installed it and will play with it when time permits. I can't guarrantee it works 100% accurate, time will tell. It will be good if other members give their opinion.

is the app official page from market.

How about linking to an info page on the app?

Anyway, I have a satellite finder app on my phone (dont know if its the same one as this - not downloading it edit: different app - linked below), I have used it to see if I would have LOS to satellites (dish near trees, etc.). As long as your phones sensors are calibrated, its reasonably accurate. Should be the same with most sat finder apps.

It could probably also be used to find what satellites would be available to a motorised dish install, but I dont do that kind of stuff.

Yes, the app I use requires a data connection for all but the demo mode.

I don't think so, gordon. At least with the app I uploaded.
The only what is required is to have GPS hardware to determine your location and proximity sensors on your phone to get the alignment done.
Also, the app has an augmented reality feature using your phone's camera which is very handy if you have trees on a way or almost on a way. You will see what do you need to cut .
The app is not demo if someone is interested.

Yeah mine gets the satellite listings when turned on. Hence why it requires the connection. The app I use is not a demo either, in case that wasnt clear (edited post).

There is a fine line between "Hobby" and "Madness"

I read the advert but unless the mobile has built in GPS, I cant see how it would work outside a mobile telephone area and I havent seen any mobiles advertising stand alone GPS facilities.
If this works inside a house then its using the mobile phone system because I have 3 GPS devises and all of them are 'blind' once they cant 'see' the sky and how well can it 'triangulate' in areas where you only have one tower 'visible'?

Pretty much all smartphones have inbuilt GPS (along with alot of other things). It wont work inside a house in most cases, just as a normal GPS wouldnt. Mobile data access may be required depending on the app (fromaron's app doesnt require data, the one Ive used does).

My phone apparently even has GLONASS support (Russian GPS system)
