    Default Maps

I have been asked by a friend of mine to ask about maps for his Garmin Nuvi.
He does a lot of off roaring and would like off road maps for the Nuvi. Do they exist?

Shonky Maps, OZTopo, Topo and Tracks4Australia all work on the Nuvi.

Although Shonky Maps, OZTopo 3 & 4, Garmin Topo 3 and Tracks4Australia all work on the Nuvi, only Garmin Topo 3 will "autoroute" (it will guide you to your selected destination turn by turn via road ways).
The other maps will not auto-route they will guide you in a straight line.

For off roading I find that OzTopo has more detail in some areas than Garmin Topo, however, there are also places where Garmin Topo has the better detail.
Shonky & T4A are not very accurate compared to the other 2 & lack real detail.

So if your friend want's "autorouting" capability, then the choice is easy, Garmin Topo 3, providing his Nuvi has a Micro SDHC card slot, as Gtopo3 is 2.6GB. Don't know of any Nuvi's that would fit that on internal memory.
If he wants the best detail in all areas he will want both OzTopo V3 & Garmin Topo 3.
The 2 of these combined are 3.9GB & just fit on some 4GB cards, some 4GB cards don't have the full capacity & so its a bit of a gamble trying to put both mapsets on a 4GB card, therefore I would suggest an 8GB card, if its a late model Nuvi it should be able to handle 16GB at least.

EDIT: OzTopo V4.0 is now 1.5 GB so combined with Gtopo3 @ 2.6 GB a 4GB card will not fit.

    Thanks for the replies.
I dont think his Nuvi as a micro card slot, unless it's well hidden.

If it doesn't have a Card slot then either Shonky Maps or T4A should fit, maybe both depending on the available internal memory.
These maps can also be made smaller by only transferring the region or state you want onto the GPS using MapSource.

With cracked versions of OzTopo3 & Garmin Topo 3 the same can be done, however it is a lot more complicated.

What Model Nuvi has he got?
