I clamped the fuel return line tonight and tried to start and still the same..... fires here and there when cranking but won't run.

Vote for CAS. My VN did the same thing although it would eventually start but backfired and carried on as if the sparkplug leads were crossed and then stalled.
You can check the O/P pulses with a CRO at the connector while cranking.
The VN has two sensors within the same pickup.

It's funny you suggest this because I've been thinking of joining.

you cant use the breakdown service for at least 3 days after you join , but it could be worthwhile.
we have premium care for both cars ( $150 each ) and have not needed it in years but nice knowing its there if we do. our neighbour got stung $200 for a 12klm tow when his car broke down recently. i offered to flat tow it but thats illegal and the fine would have been $255!

I also had it for the Mrs, just a simple thing like a flat tyre change and knowing that she did not need to call and bother me made it worth while.

Most are pretty good at what they do, there are a few rouge RACV road assist drivers that start by checking the oil and water level when it wont start.....then charge you to top up your fluids when it had nothing to do with the problem.

because we travel down to Melb etc if you break down more than 150kms from home they will put you up for the night in a motel etc.

Anyway getting off topic. I measured the leads and the longest was 5kohm and the shortest 1.2kohm and the rest were in between so all looks ok.
I bought a small can of AeroStart/Start you bastard and thought I'll crank the car first. It started to fire and vrooooom. It wasn't running as smooth as it should but after 30secs was ok. So now I have to wait and see if it will start tomorrow morning!

    The party continues..........

Got a bad batch of fuel in a motorcycle (CBR 900R Fireblade) once, started ok but ran like shit, had to flush all the fuel out & replace filter, it then ran but had lag in mid range & wouldn't rev into the redline.
Ended up replacing the spark plugs which fixed the latter problem. Think that the crap fuel coated them with a layer that retarded the spark.

Hope you don't have to go that far with VT.
Flushing fuel in bike is easy, cars not so easy.
    Cheers, Tiny

It's definitely time to retire it!

I've had a few CAS and I found it was when you stopped the car after it was hot the CAS suffered from heat soak and engine wouldn't start. Chuck a bucket of water over the harmonic balancer area (because the cas is behind it) and it starts. So I'm waiting to see how it goes when it gets hot.

When I got it running earlier I was standing towards the rear of the car and I thought the fuel pump sounded a bit on the loud side.

Unfortunately I don't think the old inline donks cut it these days. Well maybe the old Nissan 3.0l that was in the VL.
Mine has 307,000km's on the clock and gets less than 10l/100 on the highway still.

just inder your coils the wires some times gets a break or loose connection.
spark plug wires sometimes come out of lead near plug.

(BCM)when you get a body fault, leave key in ignition for half an hour on acc.
    then will mostly start.
some times you may have to do security reset.

At 300,000 i put a low klm replacement from wreckers $600.
I have a VZ REAR END TO GO IN .with adjustment bars.

The bloody think is still runnin which is a good thing but you always want to know why.
Service time is in a couple of thousand km's so new leads, plugs, all the consumerables will be replaced (not that it hasn't always been done on a regular basis).
