    Default DVD Recorders

Any one tried to buy a dvd recorder lately?
I found one with only a composite input. What happened to all those with s video and some with component inputs.

I have never seen one with component input, even S-Video was rare. If you can find an LG RH397D it might meet your needs: HDD & DVD recording with composite, firewire input & S-Viideo (SD tuner only).

panasonic had s-video the ones i have do don't know about the BD ones though. These days people are using there computers to record up to hd content with capture devices like these which some can record via component, s-video or unencripted hdmi, which i haven't used a dvd recorder for years because they only let you record in sd.

I've had a couple, they only came about close to the end of the DVD recorders popularity though so disappeared quicker than they arrived

Yes Pioneer had a component input as did my old conia 160gb hdd.
I have seen a Topfield pvr with component input and record to hdd or usb drive.
I was looking for someone that only has basic know how and wanted to copy his favourite programs off fox to take on holidays. I think composite will do but the one he bought had no inputs at all.

Do you need to record to HDD or DVD direct? Have a Pioneer DVD recorder with SVideo and FireWire inputs, no HDD or Digital tuner.

Manufacturers seem to be moving away from things with useful functions and features.
With the shift to HD, interfaces such as S-VHS and component seem to be disappearing.
Even the ubiquitous composite connector is going west.

What we are seeing is a shift away from analog and into the digital domain. With the proliferation of devices that use SD cards, there is no need to use analog.

Good reason therefore to hang on to things that have analog interfaces, as sometimes that's the only way we can get recordings off old media and onto other formats.

I notice with my Panasonic DVD/HD recorder that it has a DV input, but no DV output.
Something to do with copyright management etc.
If there was a commercial equivalent machine, it would have all these connectors and some, but the cost would be right up there as well.
