You can maybe disable the internal dvd in bios.
Maybe boot sequence change needed in bios as well.
or Make a bootable xp cd
Iv been banging my head against the wall with this one!!!
I recently bought a laptop off ebay for a good price but the catch was the internal DVD drive was stuffed,
I have an external DVD drive and an external floppy drive hooked up via USB (no floppy drive on the lappy)
when i get to the part of installing XP after booting from floppy, the lappy tryes to boot from the stuffed internal DVD drive???
it does recognise the external DVD but wont run XP on it just keeps trying to run from stuffed drive???
any suggestions???
*i was thinking of disconnecting the internal DVD but not sure wether it will work and im also unsure of a way around with out dissconecting the internal????

What happens if I press alt + F4?
ill have a go tonight, very painfull, dont know why microsoft didnt make 2000 and XP CD bootable???
The Win2K and XP CDs ARE bootable. That's how you install them.
If your XP CD isn't self-booting when you close the drive, then you need to go into the BIOS and tell the computer to boot from that drive.
Where you may come unstuck is if the computer does not support booting from USB. Not all BIOS support this feature.
If that's the case then you will have to repair the internal DVD.
Studio, it is booting from the floppy drive that is connected to the USB so im not sure, but i know for sure that 2000 needs the dos installed first before it boots(ie the 4 set up disks) (or 6 for XP)
iv recently recived a copy of XP, is XP able to start directly from the drive like 95 and 98???
to boot xp you need to set the unit to boot from cd , the problem you might have is that it is not able to boot from the usb cd
if it does start to boot you have 5 seconds once started to press any key other wise it just goes to the next in the boot order
removing the disk drive didnt work it still didnt recognize the external drive, what a pain. im going to have to buy a new drive,
it mainly due to the shitty bios! not very flexable!
what are Toshiba ultra slim DVD drives going for these days??????
What about copying xp to a bootable flash drive.
There is a lot of info on how to do this, as I have just done it myself for my eeepc.

BTW you can install win98, then from the graphical interface you can install xp as an upgrade...that will probably work, as it loads most of the i386 folder before rebooting...
once again im not sure the bios will let me do it on account it wont boot from USB!
all very painfull, so this lap top hasnt turned out cheap because it needs a new drive
Z80 its a toshiba portege A200, these thing wernt released to the public they were sold in bulk to schools etc.
ill try and get a pic but from what the tech guy said at lappy king that the drives are rare and it will take him up to six months to get????
he also said that it was a DVD ultra slim drive??
read third paragraph,
ill post pics but i dont think you will have one, and im only reapeating what iv been told!!!!! whether it is right or not
It's a standard model with a bundle somewhere, that's the "education" bit.
They can't justify designing an entire machine just for a school...
Companies like Computelec used to make up model numbers by making DVD drives an option etc...so it will be some crap like that.
The parts will be available from another identical looking "model".
I'm in the same boat - I have two of the same laptops with dead dvd drives. Anyone got an idea where I can get new drives?
post pics of the label on the actual drive mate...
i may have one lying around....
I haven't worked out how to get it out yet, no screws on this thing that i can see....
You can install from an external CD drive but it's a bit fiddly. You need to boot from a floppy which contains an autoexec.bat file which containds the CD ROM drivers. Then the computer will see the external CD ROM. Put the the XP disk in the the CD ROM and run the program which installs Windows. From memory it might be winnt, and it may be in another folder. If you need more details, I will try to find the floppy I created a couple of years ago.
