    Default dvb-s and w_scan on ubuntu 12.04.1

    Hi all,

I'm very new to all this so be nice

    I've done the following:

I have a foxtel IQ box. There are two coax leads into it. I've split one between the STB and a TeVii S660. Foxtel works fine through STB so all good.

TeVii is attached to Ubuntu 12.04.1 and driver and firmware load fine (dmesg and lsusb show all is well).

Now, with my hauappage DVB-T stuff i can run w_scan and create channels.conf etc so i'm trying to do the same with satellite.

I know much of it is encrypted i just wanna see if i can find the transponders etc.

    So i tried:

    w_scan -fs -s S156E0 -X

    it starts well:

    Code:
w_scan version 20120605 (compiled for DVB API 5.4)
using settings for 156.0 east Optus C1/D3
    scan type SATELLITE, channellist 6
    output format czap/tzap/szap/xine
WARNING: could not guess your codepage. Falling back to 'UTF-8'
output charset 'UTF-8', use -C <charset> to override

    but ultimately ends with
    Code:

    (time: 01:38)

    ERROR: Sorry - i couldn't get any working frequency/transponder
     Nothing to scan!!
Any ideas what this might mean? Or am i just waaay off track with my thinking? Is the splitter part of the problem (ie i assume i'm only getting horizontal for vertical)?

    Any guidance/tutelage/criticism welcome!

Is the cabling from your LNB direct to the decoder, or is it a shared dish with a multiswitch?

Is the splitter power pass on both legs or just one?

If just one, the polarity for both decoders connected to the splitter will be determined by decoder connected to the power pass leg.

If the splitter has power pass on both legs, the polarity will be set by the decoder with the highest voltage Eg: 18VDC for horizontal.

You would be better off using a multiswitch instead of a splitter, as all outputs of the multiswitch can operate H and V independently to each decoder.

    using LNB "UNIVERSAL"
have you got a universal LNB on your dish or is a 10700 LNB ?

Also just noticed you are using a setting for a universal LNB.

That would be incompatible for a Foxtel LNB.

Foxtel LNB's use a fixed LO LNB frequency of 10700 (or 10.7MHz).

Ok i read ya on the multiswitch. kinda silly to think this woulda worked.

i moved the gear to my old foxtel box with only one coax and it worked better.

running that w_scan command now yields:

i'd have expected more channels. and why only horizontals?

i'll try and change the lnb and see if that helps (had no idea about that so thanks!).

FWIW w_scan is, i think, using this:

    cat /usr/share/dvb/dvb-s/OptusC1-156E
    # Optus C1 satellite 156E
    # freq pol sr fec

I'll see how i go an thanks everyone!

    Default lnb was it!

Ok, i reran the command as:

w_scan -l 10700 -fs -s S156E0 -X (which i know is wrong) and that set lnb to null ... this retuned 199 channels. Nice!

    the w_scan manpage says:

    -l TYPE
choose LNB type by name (DVB-S/S2 only) [default: UNIVERSAL],
"-l?" for list of known LNBs.
    and -l? says
    UNIVERSAL
    Europe
    10800 to 11800 MHz and 11600 to 12700 Mhz
Dual LO, loband 9750, hiband 10600 MHz
    DBS
    Expressvu, North America
    12200 to 12700 MHz
    Single LO, 11250 MHz
    STANDARD
    10945 to 11450 Mhz
    Single LO, 10000 Mhz
    ENHANCED
    Astra
    10700 to 11700 MHz
    Single LO, 9750 MHz
    C-BAND
    Big Dish - Monopoint LNBf
    3700 to 4200 MHz
    Single LO, 5150 Mhz
    C-MULTI
    Big Dish - Multipoint LNBf
    3700 to 4200 MHz
    Dual LO, 5150/5750 Mhz
when i used "ENHANCED" that completely died (no frequencies found).

So i'm not sure how to set a number for -l but i'll keep looking when i'm less tired.

Thanks for the help! I'm sure i'll be back soon with more newbie questions!

If you do have a universal LNB, select the Europe setting.

    Did Foxtel install your LNB?

If yes, it won't be a universal LNB. It will be a fixed LO of 10700.

yeah foxtel did ... i just need to figure out how to make w_scan use the fixed number instead of one of its presets ...

without a doubt this has been the most helpful forum i've found! you guys are really great!
