Default wii softmodding and drive chips

I've managed to softmod a wii I brought a while ago that didn't have a drive chip in it (looked up the serial number) however I'm after a second wii that I can softmod to read burnt discs (because some games I've tried aren't compatible with hard drive loading, especially gamecube ones) and just wondering, if a wii has ANY drive chip at all, does that mean it can't play dvd backups? Or is it only certain drive chips? Ones with no drive chip at all are very hard to find second-hand nowadays.

For what I know the newest Wii's (the slim ones, black or red) are the ones that can't load backup disc. You should be looking for an old Wii. That should be able to read backups.
