Automate commands / Script remote commands

I want to initiate a handful of commands as if they where button presses on the remote control. Anyone know how to script virtual buttons presses on the remote control ?

Yeah _ I got a universal remote (urc 8910) and programmed a macro in the remote and it does exactly that
your mileage may vary

Needs to run at 4am in the morning when no-one is around to press the macro button on the remote. It is to initiate a load of the next 24 hours of TV guide. Takes about 2 minutes to run so I don't want to have to wait for the DM while I am around.

cron job ? Do a script and add it to your daily cron jobs at 4am ..

hard to help when you do not tell us what exactly you want help with ... if it is grabbing an external file wget might be a good start ..

If we do not know what you want to automate exactly who can we suggest a script mind reading skills are undiminished today

Glad you got the answer. No problem here with the reading skills, just understanding exactly what was required, thus my question

keep us informed on your script progress
I dont know if there is a rc button buffer
so I guess you might have to program sleeps in to wait for completions
if it was me - I would get up in the middle of the night - just to watch the dm take control of itself ...
