Smile newbie seeks advice on newly purchased gps

    Hi guys /all.

I am new to the forum so ecuse me if I dont come over as genius..

I have recently Purchased a GPS system via Ebay . and i was told by a mate that the system in it ( route 66) has outdated charts etc...

What he suggested even tho he is not a full bottle himself is to find out if I can usea another charts from differing products .EG tom tom, garmin , Mio.. and so on ..

As I have searched for the latest route 66 chart updates and I failed to find any clues .Thus I am here amongst you good people ..

My question really is can i download from wherever,(for free [Wink] ) another software to put into my sd card .. I also read somewhere that route 66 uses Navtek maps .But that just confused me more..

Here are a few details of what i purchased..

    * CPU: Samsung 400 MHz

This GPS Navigation system uses the latest SiRF star III GPS chipset:

    and other features ....

    Key Features:

    - Built-in GPS Antenna and SD Card Reader
    - Latest Australian map supplied on 1Gb SD Card

    - Turn-by-turn voice instructions and on-screen directions
    - Quick address look-up thanks to FuzzySearch™ address search engine
    - Display the maps in either 2D or 3D mode, day time or night time mode

    ..This is what concerns me

"Q. Where can I get non-Australian maps from and can I use other software's map?
    A. Not available.

    Q. Does this GPS detect red light / speed camera?
    A. Yes! our map includes the red light / speed camera hotspots as one of the points of interest

    Q. Is there any map update's available?
    A. No.

I would appreciate any ideas or opinions any one has to offer as I,m in the dark with this..

    cheers for now Benaus

Tomtom is probably the most popular GPS program and has excellent third party support. I have tried Route 66 once and found it a bit bland on the feature and display side.iGo is also a good one , and you can run multiple programs on the one unit.

Do you have a brand or model number for this GPS ? Also , do you know what operating system is on it , ie , Window CE etc ?

You *should* be able to install another application like Tomtom and use that instead as there are regular POI ( Place of Interest ) files which are updated reguarly such as speed/red light cameras.

Let us know what you can find in regards to what is written on it , or even a link to your ebay auction so we can have a look.

    Cheers
    Sanity

Wow 7". That is massive. It would be a PNA model.

This thread will interest you. Your one is not the same model but the programs and the process to make it all work will be much the same.

There are lots of alternatives to the GPS software you can run on it. On my cheap one I run TomTom 6 and OziExplorer without issues.
By reading this, you have already given me control over a tiny slice of your mind

I have one of these 7 Inch widescreen gps units with igo installed. The only problem with updating is they use a custom widescreen skin.

also has video player, audio player, fm transmitter etc.

7 inch is awesome, makes my ipaq 4700 look like a toy.....

change the igo executable filename (in the downloaded igo folder) to the same as the route66 one on your gps's supplied card and you will just need to swap cards to change between igo and route66.

similar to igo, but i reckon it's better....

latest aussie map is more up to date than igo 8 or tom tom (at least here in the wild west)....

    link below....

password for rar file is: austech

includes latest aus map and install files for pda, pna and smartphone.

just copy to ROOT of sd card and click on navi.exe in navi folder.

included is link for online keygen...
