Free To Air menas NO smartcards.
If you want to get the most out of one dish, you would do well to get yourself a 90cm dish, good LNB, and a motech.
Hi guys,
Frustrated by certain events with fta tv here in perth, ive decided to look into fta satellite.
What should i be looking at? Obviously a dish, decoder, cables etc, but more what should i be looking for in a smart card to get some fta from a satellite?
Appreciate all comments, reccomendations and the like
Cheers

So what is available via FTA satellite then (in terms of ch 7,9,10 etc)??
You need to be looking at Optus Aurora and what channels you can legally have activated.
with a 90cm dish & motor -
optus D1 has ABC 1 & plus HD for the 5 timezones plus a couple of feeds
Optus C1 has NITV & Aljazeera
Optus D2 has a heap of FTA mainly arabic, christian tv (if that floats your boat) Russia Today and a heap of feeds
Asiasat 2 has a heap of sports feeds (which I can't get yet with my 65cm grrrrr)
Asiasat 4 has good sports feeds
Measat 2 a couple of fta asian channels
Intelsat 8 has some arabic fta tv, one in particular has been showing some good movies of late.(diehard4 the other night)
Intelsat 2 I can only receive Ariang tv ( Korea's world tv english speaking)
Intelsat 701 and free the french we say.
you should easily be able to receive most of these birds on an 90cm......and all viewable without a subscription card except intelsat701, but I'm sure if you did some more searching you would find what you needed

Not sure what your frustration is caused by, picture quality, content, adds or all of those. Most TV is sh*t anyway. You not chasing Mr White the second by any chance??
As already posted, not a huge amount fta sat available... suggest you go and ask one of the reputable sat suppliers in Perth - they can give you more info and can give you costs etc.
If it were me, I would be looking at a dreambox and maybe Select TV or get a sub and play.
Don't know is anyone has told you about it is the site that lists all the satellites and various channels available free to air and encrypted etc. If in the columb entiteled Video Encryption there is a F that means Free To Air channel.

well we already have foxtel.
its frustration with times more than anything. afl starting at 8:30 when its already finished live.
Your Foxtel is going to have to remain a stand alone system there is nothing you can do with it these days. Maybe start with a 95cm dish a Strong 4653X decoder box and point the dish at D2 there is loads of FTA on D2 also often feeds of live sports.

A bit more to add:
D1 has ABC1 and ABC2 for all the time zones as well as the SBS's/SBS2's
D2 you pick up good feeds like V8 Pooper cars, CCTV9-English Chinese channel, Press TV
C1 has Optus Aurora and if you had a Dreambox you may be able to get these channels
Someone may have a bit more to add

Fox cable or sat? We have fox cable with second sub. son uses second card via d500s at his house, supposed to share cost 50/50 but you know what son's are like - I pay subs he uses...
We also use cable card in another dbox via sat at our semi perm caravan.
Dream allows aurora viewing (atm) which sometimes gives local live AFL footy via WIN or GWN. Used to be always live but I think AFL get too much to show live in country WA anymore..
cheers...
What feeds are available? Is there any chance of getting live AFL on these feeds (say from channel 10 vic and other states)??
