gigabit switch info

hey gang
at home im running an old network hub
now it's getting a little old 10mps
just wanted to know which way to go switch or hub
and want it to still work on my old xbox and all my old cables
will a 10 100 1000 switch work for me or will i have to get a 100 hub

I think you would be going to find a new Hub these days. Just get yourself a 10/100 Switch. Unless your moving really large files around your network constantly, your unlikely to need the speed that a gigabit port will offer. Aside from that, the xbox is only 10/100 and a switch will be faster anyway due to no collisions on the network. Your old cables should also be fine with a 10/100 switch, but maybe not so for a gigabit switch.

If you're putting in a GB n/w you'd probably want Cat6 cabling.

i run a gigabit switch and only use cat5 same stuff i was running on my repotec switch.

It works without issues but i had no choice as the house is fully cabled and it would be impossible to rip all the cat5 out and replace with cat6

You can use cat5 as long as all 4 pairs are connected. Some, and it really isnt that common, cat5 cables only have 2 pairs connected for 10/100Mbit. 1000Mbit connections use all 4 pairs to tx/rx. So you can use cat5 as long as they are good quality cables. Typically if the cables are certified all 4 pairs will be terminated, its only the cheap stuff thats not certified that wont have all pairs connected.

i thought you need Cat5E to be able to run gigabit speeds.
Cat5 is certified to run 100mbps

When people talk of cat5 these days, they are generally referring to cat5e as the specification is almost identical except for stricter performance specs on the cat5E standard. Cat6 is cabling standard for gigabit however as it has ratings of up to 250Mhz as opposed to 100Mhz for the cat5/E (Enhanced) standard.
