    Marty, might be time to remove the CPU and clean the top surface then google the part number. If its definitely an AM3 CPU you could send it to me and I'll stick it in my AM3 board to test.

    order a new am3 moby, cpu, 2 gb ddr3

    You may be right Phil but I have decided to go this way and if the CPU is ok I shall then have the option of buying a new MOBO and using the ram I got in the original deal as it is OK.

    If the CPU is stuffed I may can the project which was only a learning exercise anyway.

    These last 2 posts show just how 2 intelligent human beings go about things so differently.
    And I reckon there is more than half a chance that at least 1 item in Marty17 shed was owned by philquad at some stage.

    A big thank you to mickstv for testing my CPU in his mobo with the end result being that the CPU is fine so I shall now attempt to get a replacement mobo

    no, your going to buy a new am3 moby for $45 from msy, plus 2x2 gig kingston ddr3 ram for $30 @ do it properly arnt you marty

    Actually Phil the 4 GB Ram that was included in the deal is Ok so I shall just buy the $45 mobo if I cannot get a RMA replacement thru gigabyte.
