But still, UEC's sluggish response times and 'bandaid' PVR option aren't the fault of the middleware. It's still a cheap entry level box with very little power, now doing more than it was originally intended. Middleware has plenty of restrictions, but I reckon in the hands of Humax it could be a good performing box.

I haven't checked out the EPG performance on the UECs but if its anything like the Freeview EPG on terrestrial boxes it won't really matter if the Humax has plenty of horsepower or not. The Freeview EPG is a slug on any terrestrial box I've seen it running on.

I haven't a clue what the EPG is like on terrestrial boxes but it was crap on UEC but with the latest update it is now pretty good. No longer slow and sluggish.

Middleware aside, I'll still be looking at the Humax as a main box, especially if it has twin tuners, then I'll be demoting the UEC to the spare TV.

so from what you are all saying is that if the humax proves to be better than the uec, there will still be no way for us to use our existing cards in a new box.

I wonder if there is any provision to transfer an activation from one STB card to another.... with vast ?

STB's will need upgrading from time to time, & some Vast STB's are about 3 years old now...

Why would you want to? Wouldn't the Humax box come with a card? As far as I know there is no limit on how many VAST receivers you can own and register.

When I had to have a VAST STB replaced (Dead P/S), it was first Deregistered by the Installer (Warranty) and a new STB had to be registered in my name (which the stupid installer neglected to give VAST the new SMART card number for).

I would presume (not Assume) if Humax do in fact release a VAST compliant STB, it will have to be issued with an appropriate Smart Card BUT depending on the requirements imposed by the VAST Administration, will the Smart Card be 'Locked to the Box' or not???
I really do hope the use of the term VAST is what we think it is and not just the generic use of the individual letters.

For some reason when I hit Save to make a reply, after a few moments I get a notice asking if I want to leave the page and if I say no, it goes away and then double posts my reply, this is the 3rd time its happened.
I think if I say 'Yes' my reply is lost......

You are not the only one with the problem, try just entering your message and then hitting the POST QUICK REPLY. An other thing that bugs me is that when I want to backspace my cursor for some reasons disappears. And another thing is that I have to enter my details twice to log in.

    Maybe this deserves another Post.

Correct, the box & card are married, no divorce available.

    just my Experience.....

I had a Vast STB replaced by UEC.... last year.... (I got a Card & STB combo but not Activated)

it was a simple procedure to ring Vast & I told them I had a faulty STB replaced....& they transfered the activation from my old card to my new card within seconds....while i was on the phone

Of course, I had to give them the Name it was Registered to vast with, & Smartcard number of the New card ... I think...thats it

would be nice if we could do this if we wanted to upgrade a vast STB for another STB ...?

    G’Day All,

I’ve found the VAST registration staff very easy to get on with. They have a job to do and they do it well considering the pressures excerted by a few “not so happy” customers.
Like UEC, they have guide lines to adhere to.
As for the 4121’s they are not worth the money but from my records they have about a 12% failure rate within the first year or so.
I am first to admit that they are poorly designed with sub-standard PSU’s and cobbled accessories package and the raft of thoughtless updates.
They are probably overpriced for what they are but still not a lot of money by todays standards (less than 200 litres of petrol).

Having said all that, if Humax build a box with real electros in the power supply, a bit of mains stability filtering and twin tuners.
It will be me beating a path to their door to purchase one.

Nothing wrong with a UEC DSD 4121 as long as it is holding the bar door open !

    Regards,

How is this better than just going online to register a new box in your name/location?

sounds familiar me=box haha will UEC ever release a twin tuner model or just keep throwing their heaps of sh*t out? if the rumoured prices are true for humax around $600 thats a fair wack but utilmately better and I wouldnt hesitate to recommend, just hope it doesnt fall over. I wouldve thought the ship had sailed being the last few places are being turned off this year

I was just thinking about if it was a Traveler activated STB..... how many STB's would they let you register in your Name/address ? .....( I have not heard there is a limit.....?)

If you are Home Activated...... how many will they let you activate.... ? I think there is three other spaces for additional STB's on the Registration Form ?

But if they will let you have as many Vast STB's as you want, I guess it will not be a problem...

You can have as many as you can afford. I have sold several multi units to private individuals and 15 & 8 to 2 caravan parks. Multi unit registration can be done by phone, just give them the install details and all the card no's = instant access.

There is no restriction on Volume, just Location of the VAST stb's.
