Default Help Pls: XP serious lag issue

I have a laptop here that just lags.
    Acer aspire 3500.
    running xp sp2
Scanned with cureit, kaspersky and hijackthis
    nothing at all.
When it boots it just lags, unusable.
    Safe mode, no lag.
Did an acer recovery from their hidden image and same probs.
    Got me stuffed.
    Any help greatly appreciated

Give Ultimate Troubleshooter a go to investigate what you have running, it gives advice on many usual apps. a PC has loaded, if it says "unknown" a google search should sort out what it is.

thanks for the link ssrattus, but I really broke it now.
Did a recovery again, gets to the continue screen at the end of recovery and lags so much I cannot continue, so cannot give your TUT a go.
Has to be a hardware issue I think.

sounds like overheating, and the cpu has gone into thermal shutdown mode.

Have done the format thing twice. No go.
I thought about the heat issue Z80 but the cpu fan switches on and off as normal.

did you say safe mode no lag?
    maybe a driver problem.

Strange one. Safe mode was ok, could not fault, but a system recovery ( as in an acer ghost image) would have restored everything back to factory.

I was running some diags from the hirens cd and got corrupted video with a crash( this might explain no probs in safe mode as running in VGA).

Bit annoying, the only PC that has ever beat me after hundreds( Bit hard to swap hardware out of a laptop) but after 5 hours I had to pull the pin.
It has gone with the owner to acer. Do these guys component level diagnose or just chuck a new motherboard in it? If it is a new MB I think it is not worth repairing.

Thank you to all for your help.

I usually try to keep away from laptops, no spares.
It will be interesting to see what was wrong with it.

Why do so many people think that formatting a hard drive is some kind of magic "cure-all"? Perhaps someone can enlighten me.

I get it a lot with my clients - they often tell me that they need to reformat their drive, especially to reinstall Windows.

Rarely do I reformat a drive. I did one last week because the FAT had become corrupted, other than that or a bad sector table I can see no valid reason to format!

As shown, it didn't fix the problem.

Format is always my last resort .. but sometimes its only the answer .

You could try an OEM installation of XP. I use that with all PCs including laptops. Activation is no problem but you do need the drivers from the Net. At least you get the latest drivers which may overcome some bugs in the originals.

Having any norton product on your system is a good reason to format as you will NEVER get rid of the crap completely.
OEM's really shit me as there are so many different versions and the legit serial you have with the system never works, even with keychanger.
I can easy put on a slipstreamed pirated copy, but this is not really the way I like to do things when the customer has paid for a license.
It comes down to time. I would rather not format, but if you look in "program files" and there are 400 folders, then format is for me.
BTW my system that I use everyday running xp pro was not formatted for over 4 years until a windows update screwed it.
I will NEVER have automatic updates turned on again.

    yep.

    I'll tell you why...

It guarantees that the machine will be quicker to boot up afterwards and the customer will definitely SEE an improvement.

Two things happen to dramatically improve the speed.

    (a) the system registry will be vanilla, without remnants of uninstalled programs

    (b) a multitude of font files won't be present to slow down the desktop refresh process.

Yeah my moneys on ram and then format and install.

My lappy's been playing up did a format and reinstall for nothing.
Its got to be the ram, should have looked at that first.
Nortons is the best way to slow the hell out of a lappy.
