Default Hail damage and mesh dishes.

    Hi everybody,
I am just wondering if other people have any ideas about protecting mesh dishes from hail and storm damage. Comprehensive house insurance will usually cover and replace badly damaged dishes from hail and tree damage anyway.
I just wondered about the idea of throwing a large piece of canvas material and fastening the corners. Any ideas or a waste of an idea?
    Thanks everybody.

    Thumbs up Home Radome.

May be useful if long absences, but you would soon tire of that, as hailstorms are so unpredictable in occurrence and severity.
There is nothing to stop you using a radome if you could afford it.

Does this give you any ideas? $88 free post.

    How about Shade cloth?
You can buy it in rolls, squares and triangles, porous and waterproof.
Another choice would be a 'Market Umbrella' which is almost 'cone shaped BUT you have to remove the metallic ribs in case of interference.
One thing to consider is how 'Invisible' is the cloth to the incoming signal both wet and dry.
The cloth is not invulnerable to hail damage but if the hail hits it at an angle, it should deflect most of it.
I dont like that 'Green House' that B4life shows as I dont think the plastic would stop much and the heat buildup under it might affect the LNB.
Although that frame with shade cloth over could be a real working propostion.
I have something similar as a car port currently as the roof collapsed on the shed in a storm a few months ago.
I know I can turn on my 2 GPS on and they lock while I am still fully under it.

Hail is usually in combination with strong wind gusts so adding any sort of 'sail' or cover for protecting would also add windload.
Most household insurances have an excess and you might find the excess is close to the same value of a new dish anyway.
Best bet if your dish is motorized would be to swing the dish away from the storm and pointing as low to the horizon as possible (not the best for windload but lesser surface area for hail to hit)

There are covers (camouflage) available for C-band dishes, but they are expensive (around $1K).

They are made from an RF-transparent material, but as weirdo correctly stated, any cover on a mesh dish will greatly increase it's wind resistance, which it exactly what a mesh dish is designed not to do. (eg: the mesh is designed to let most of the wind through).

There's different strengths of dish mesh too.

The cheaper Chinese dishes are usually much thinner and weaker mesh, which obviously don't withstand hail as well as dishes with stronger mesh.

Solid dishes withstand hail much better than mesh dishes, but once again, they have a far greater wind loading.

Even solid dishes can become pock-marked from large hail and strength and quality of the dish once again determines how resistant it is to impact.

Eg: heavy commercial dishes will withstand hail much better that cheap pressed-metal dishes... etc, etc.

If you think just a few steps further and use the FRAME that B4life showed with a 'suitable' material that stands ABOVE the dish and imposes no load on the dish could be an option.
I thought of something along the lines of B4lifes idea when a poster wanted to instal a dish but was worried about the visual effect it might have on his neighbours and the general dislike by some when they see a Dish.
You can buy cheap 'Gazebbo's' that are just a bare frame staked down so they dont come under Council scrutiny and recalcitrant neighbours, throw over some shade cloth, instant invisible Dish !!

When i use to buy dishes, most suppliers had spare dish petals, most of the mesh dishes i used were in 4 sections, suppliers use to sell the 3 petals that were OK from damaged new dishes that were damaged in transit.

I wouldnt bother trying to protect it, probably the cost covering it and all the mucking around close to the price of 1-2 new dish petals anyway.....
