    Default DVX555U Pixelating

    Hi

Just bought one of these devices, whacked in a HDD, works fine , except for all the ABC channels are pixealting, stop, starting jittering etc. Only ABC channels, anyone k now what I may be able to do this resolve this.

Have another SD st box and all channels work finee and so does the HD tuner in one of my TV's, problem is just this DVDX555U.

    Many Thanks,

    Digital interferance on ABC?

2 channels, analog or digital can not live in the same space

If (for example) your ABC is in CH37UHF, and you have a VCR or Sat box etc with a modulator, and it outputs on 36, 37 or 38, and that modulator loops through to your DVX555U, then you would get digital breakup.....

Excuse my ignorance, caps on the board/tuner? Replacing it fix it?
Also noticed when it is on, it emits a whistling/hissing noise. Would this be the caps?

    Cheers

    It gets worse after that

SO wot u say above is what is making the noise? Causing ABC pixelating issues? Or both? Why does ABC only pixelate with HDD connected?

    Cheers

The ripple hits a harmonic that causes the inductive reactance to throw the circuit design specs out the window

Maybe the extra electrical noise freaks out that particular channel? On my PVR's, the very slight whistline/humming noise is the HDD spinning.

It is whistling without the HDD in.

just change the HDD to another model/make to determine if it is the HDD/STB first! I have a 555 with an 80g hdd, never had an issue.

Agree, some hard drives can cause this problem

Thanks guys will do so. But the "whistling" noise is this common on this model? Is it faulty?

    Cheers

    Fernbay's on the money.

It is a power supply issue, the hard drive is loading it more and causing spurious effects. The ABC problem could be caused by the generation of interfering signals arising from plugging the hard drive in, which is why another hard drive may work fine.

There is something to be said for getting an off the shelf item, although even these can be plagued with there own idiosyncracies.

The whistling is most likely coming from the power supply, they normally operate in the inaudible range unless overloaded or faulty.

There again, it might be tinnitus - it can get worse after a few drinks.

Took it back, and got another, havent tested a HDD in it yet, the whistling noise is also evident in the replacement but nowhere to the extent the first on was. Can only hear it if u put the ear to it and no sounds around u.
