I went to buy another one from office works the other day, noticed prices had jumped from $99 to $129.

Got their tech geek to help me and i asked why the new price? He tells me the new model has new firmware, i told him that all firmware upgrades are freely available online, he looked at me funny and muttered that customers dont know that, i mentioned they are ripping people off.

I didnt buy it, not for the price but because my Boxee had a upgrade that locked me out of putting my Uno telly DNS settings in and therefore making getting netflix only possible by putting the DNS setting in my modem which i cannot do (easily).

I suspected that WD may have done something similar on these new WD units, i couldn't prove it without buying it but i was not prepared to take the risk, im not updating my other old WD either just in case.

I read somewhere that netflix put pressure on suppliers of supported boxes to lock out countries that they dont support.....firmware upgrades might be a way for those who cannot put DNS settings in their modem.

I did the firmware upgrade to my wd live streaming a few days ago and netflix still seems fine.
Prices of these units are all over the place at officeworks...last year they were around $129 then later they dropped to $99 then around Xmas they were at $99 with a $50 gift card making them $49 effectively and now back to $129.

They have always been around $129 until recently.

I noticed new firmware available on mine yesterday and updated it, no problems at all with Netflix.

Was browsing and saw this, i thought it could be an alternative to the WD Box if you wished to watch Netflix and Hulu Plus only, possibly stream AFL and NFL to your TV to watch the league games as an app?????
There is a fine line between "Hobby" and "Madness"

I'm leaning towards one of these:

Has anyone had any Android mini PC experiences?

Just be careful with these android units because some will not allow you to input the DNS into them as they are predominately wireless devices so you will need to put them in the router which for some people (including me) does not work so well. I have seen a few of these units and they work like the raspberry PI's.

There are also a lot of scathing reviews on a lot of these usb type sticks so I would do a lot of homework before buying one.

Im just giving a heads up after what happened with my Boxee, remember my DNS settings are in my units and not the modem, just be cautious that WD does not bow to Netflix pressure to remove the ability to manually play with DNS settings or to update online automatically with new versions as boxee does, im now very cautious with new firmware updates after what i went through.

However if your DNS settings are in your modem your laughing.

I might start looking for a new modem to avoid this happening again.

That would be your best bet mate, modems are pretty cheap these days.

Just a quick clarification if you could. My setup consists of a modem...separate router and the wdtv live streaming connected by ethernet cable to the router.
My wdtv at present has the dns changed. If I wanted to change this to the setup discussed above, do I change the dns in the modem or the router or both and if I do, do I then have to change the dns in the wdtv back to what it originally was.

Sorry for all the questions but I am a real novice with network stuff.

You should only need to set up the DNS in the WDTV STB

(but I suggest do not connect it to the internet.... before putting the setting in)

People put the DNS in the Router if they are using a Roku..... (& devices like the Roku without the option to input DNS Settings in it)

if you are using a Roku & an WDTV ....you do not need to put DNS settings in the WDTV....(because, they would be in the router)

The above Posts are suggesting that it may be safer to have the DNS settings in the Modem/Router....

because whenever the device (WDTV) first starts up, or is Reset it will think it is in the county of the DNS in the Router.....
