Default Big big problem with DVD rom

Hi all, I'm not sure whats happened to my dvd rom?

my dvd rom was fine last night burning a few movies an then to night absolutely nothing.

my son went to load the software for his digital camera and nothing was happening, upon further investigation I can't see drive in windows explorer not even the drive letter.

I then opened computer management then device manager and I can see dvd drive under device manager, the drivers appear up to date.

In windows explorer I can see my two hard drives but nowhere can I the dvd drive?

I've tried system restore to no avail

when I load a cd or dvd in the drive I can hear the drive start spinning as normal but thats where it ends.

anyone with any ideas about what may be happening, my dvd drive is a liteon brand, could it be the drive has cacked itself.

    any help is really appreciated.

Check the ide cable, when the pc is off.
Boot into safe mode and make sure there are not duplicates of the same dvd drive, if so delete them all.
    reboot.

Hi Phill......I have done what you have suggested, I then rebooted and as it was rebooting I could where the system had picked it up and tried to install the hardware and I'm afraid its the same situation, i can see the dvd drive in device manager but is still not registering in windows explorer.

Hi Rob.......checking the Ide cable was going to be my next step I figured if I disconnect it completely reboot, then connect again then reboot again it just might pick up, I'll also try what you have suggested and let you know

thanks heaps guys really appreciate it.

Hi Rob...I don't think its possible on the board I'm using, I'm using the ASUS P5KPL-VM m/board which only has the one large ide slot and one small ide slot for the floppy drive.

So at the moment I'm running the main hard drive & dvd drive off the single ide cable and into the large ide slot and then have a second sata hard drive, which has no bearing on it, and not running a floppy drive.

but its very interesting in that when i disconnected the dvd drive then rebooted, power down again, connect the drive again then rebooted I could see the dvd drive being installed (found new hardware message), but the drive still won't show up it only shows in device manager and for the life of me I can't see anything out of the ordinary.

would it be worth my while to try a new dvd drive? i was thinking it may be the the ide cable as I believe they can be a bit precious?

If you right click on my computer/manage/storage/disk management
    Is it there?
It may be under a hidden drive letter, as your digital camera may have changed the drive allocations.
You can reallocate the letter here.

    Glad to help.
I did this to myself a few years ago. Had me scratching my head for a while.
Your digital camera may be on a hidden drive letter now.
I think in tweakui you can hide/unhide drive letters, maybe unhide a few more to cover yourself.
