I don't know if it is the same Aldi camera, but I've just pulled one out and replaced it with a "real" DVR/camera setup. The customer said it was nothing but a waste of money.

    Hi watchdog

I hope you're still going to get this thread notice ...

How would (or similar) stack up then? Happy to throw in my own HDD.

Just in the process of building and thought that its much better to get one in before the plaster/etc goes up ... but don't have buckets to spend.

If you haven't got the money for a proper quality system now and I'm not sugesting high end gear, then just put the cabling in now during your build and later when your in a better position financially, purchase an appropriate system to suit your needs then. Don't waste money on junk now as you will just regret it later.

I'll put it this way. IF the four cables that come with it are in fact mini coax and NOT simply shielded audio cable then they would be worth more than the $118.36 cost of the entire kit.

The case against - cmos chiped cameras are usually 1/4" 480 line low def NOT 600 line HD ( but I could be wrong)
you may get video to 60' at night but it won't be usable. I usually halve the stated IR range
as stated the cables supplied could be an ongoing source of problems especially in a noisy environment
no mention of the recording characteristics ( D1 , CIF etc) of the DVR
    no mention of warranty
most "budget" DVRs I've come across have a user interface which is difficult to say the least.
still need to pay $100 or so for a 1Tb HDD

The case for -- it has buttons on the DVR AS WELL as a remote

All Aldi items come with a minimum 12 months warranty as required by Consumer laws.

One thing with Aldi is you can try it and return it if it doesnt come up to your requirements.

I think one thing people forget is that no camera will ever 'see' as well as your eyes particularly in low to almost dark situations.
I have one rear car cam and another connected to a InCar Cam and both 'see' very differently depending on the illumination so does a hand held digital video cam so if I was looking to instal a surveillance system, I would try to add a suitable light fitted with a motion detector either solar or Mains powered to cover the area the camera can 'see' and not to expect the camera to show a clear image over too great an area.

    .
my reply was to Flashfletch and his ebay kit. IF there is a warranty it will probably cost more in return freight & insurance than it did to buy in the first place.

    Thanks bss904 & watchdog.

You've convinced me that I WILL need to spend more and get something with a good reputation, not just a good price. I'll talk with the sparky when he's wiring things and get some good cabling put in (along with cat 6/7/?? for networking the house) and then pick up a quality system when we have settled in.

Hey flashtech, unless you have high EMI or are looking at shielding your data cabling cat 7 is an overkill for a domestic situation. You would also be very fortunate to find that your local sparky has any experience or the correct tools for termination of Cat 7 properly. Keep your separation, make sure he is installing it properly keeping bend radius' of the cable within spec and terminating properly and you'll be happy for years to come. Cheers

Little experience with networking beyond cat 5. Cat 6 would probably be fine. Will have full NBN in the new place so just wondering what would be best to put around house ...

(Is this getting too far off topic for this forum ...?)

Sorry, meant to mention Cat 6 would be what I would install. Put it this way, a major international brewer's IT dept has just asked us to run Cat 5e for a new office fit out and as you no doubt know both Cat 5e and Cat 6 support gigabit. I must admit I was a little surprised as the bulk of what we put in these days is Cat 6, but they have a pragmatic approach to what the network needs to support. There are some differences in the frequency supported, but again in a domestic situation, my advice would be go with Cat 6 and just ensure your installer keeps separation of power and data in mind as well as terminating properly, etc, etc. Good luck!

Cat5e will support gigabit and do what your house will ask of it; if your feeling jittery put cat6 in - it just costs more.
I am a Molex and Krone certified installer for reference.

Not sure where you buy your data cable from, but my wholesaler only stocks Cat6 now, as it was the same price as Cat5 or 5e per 305m.
    Thats was 18months ago.

Getting back to the original topic, I bought one of these Aldi 4 camera systems a couple of months ago.

I plan on putting something higher spec in, but was happy to spend $250 on something that I can test, have a play around with and torture before I decide exactly what I want.

No complaints, works as expected, probably better than expected as I wasn't expecting much. Its more than likely adequate for the average household who wants to keep an eye on their home when they are out via mobile phone.

This is a screen shot of it in Internet Explorer via home local IP (ie 192.xxx.x.x)

I dont have the DVR unit plugged in to a screen.

I connect to it when out via my mobile with an Android app called RX Cam Pro.

I think its pretty reasonable. Its definately not a high spec unit nor are the cameras. But as I mentioned, probably adequate for the average family that might want to check their home while away. But you arent going to be reading cars number plates or anything.

Quality isnt as good via mobile, but having said that, the screen is smaller so it looks about the same.

The camera on the roof is getting a good workout. No protection from the elements, its been up there for a week and as you can see is still going. The cover on the top changed from black to gold in 3 days

Patch panels and outlets are more expensive for cat6.
