Question New UEC DSR 4639 & Humax HDR‐1003S

Altech UEC DSR 4639 VAST Twin Tuner 500GB PVR Dual Channel Recorder

Has anyone raced out & bought one of these yet? Please give us your opinions.

Humax HDR‐1003S VAST Dual Channel PVR

Has anyone seen one of these or have any news on them?
    Cheers, Tiny

With regards to the new Humax as far as I can see there two models. Not sure it looks like one has a cassette and the other doesn't there are two prices, log onto and have a read up.
PS they or didn't have any showing of the new UEC box but does.

    Hope this helps.

Yes that's right, one is PVR & the other is PVR ready??

The question is; has any one bought the UEC DSR 4639 or managed to get a pre-release look at the Humax??

I'm guessing by the flood of replies, not.

So we are all, including the UEC supporters, hanging around waiting for the Humax which is indicated at mid April availability.

    Cheers, Tiny

I got the following response from
after I asked for an update.

"They are due anytime now. Thanks for the reminder actually! I need to email the supplier again, and get an update but they shouldn't be far away now. We have secured some of the initial release boxes that are being air freighted and due in March. Once we receive them we will ship these to those customers with pre-orders first. We still have some pre-order boxes available and are checking with our supplier to possibly secure some more if still available. After these are gone there will be a container arriving in April with a full shipment."

I notice with interest that the new Humax only uses <0.5W in standby mode which means that is doesn't leave the lnb powered up like the [old] UEC model does [not sure about the new twin tuner model]. The DSD 4121 uses about 14 watts in standby mode which is quite a lot. I am starting to think about getting the Humax -- just waiting for other people to get it to see if there are any problems.

    Follow up to above
"There has been a small delay to these and they advise that they will be here in the second week of April. This is unfortunate but out of our control and will again advise when we receive them."

I've noticed the registration online form has changed. Instead of asking what type of box and only being able to select dsd 4121 it just asks for smart card number. Does this mean their going away from having to have the right box for the right card in anticipation for the humax release. I know a lot of existing customers would love to be able to ditch their UEC box but I guess existing cards would still be tied to the box.

I am a UEC supporter. The box has given me a fantastic picture for the past year or so, so much better than the 2 aurora boxes that are gathering dust in the shed. I have not had any real problems apart for loss of picture during heavy rain. and that is my fault as I am only using a small dish left byaust@r. With the HDMI it all works through the Yama*a amp and Sony TV. I am sure that one day I will buy a different unit but that is just progress. I am in a black spot and am very gratefull to get good pictue on my TV. Oneday I hope to get hi speed internet and that will be a game changer agian. Its all progress.

Spoke to sales person this morning who has viewed and tested the new Humax.
He feels it is superior to the UEC.
He also said it has a better picture quality, better menu system and a quicker response time.
Time will tell. I should pick mine up on the 22nd of this month.

Please put up a review here once you have used it a bit. I would really like to know how it is. Thanks.

Peter, during recent heavy rains I have seen both an Austar stb and the VAST UEC stb's loose the signal within a second or 2 of each other and I have a UEC sharing an Austar dish and the other one on its Govt installed dish so primarily unless you have a whacking big dish, your going to loose the signal.
Aurora is the same as I still have a Humax receiving that signal while it lasts.
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!

Also interested to find out whether the humax remote can be learnt by a universal remote.

PS: Not at all surprised by the 'better picture quality' aspect.

    thanks.

The latest reply from Matt when I asked if the delivery date for the Humax was still the 22/04/2013

It was supposed to have been the delivery date but there was a last
minute Irdeto CAS test that Humax has to revisit on the 19th of April
before mass production. This has delayed delivery to early May from
what I can tell, I will let you know an exact date when I know.

    Regards

    Matt

I note the PVR Ready version of the Humax has been dropped from the Humax Australian web site. This puts a whole new aspect on whether I will buy. The PVR Ready was $150+ cheaper than the 500gb unit. I've got a 1tb powered HDD sitting on the UEC and the PVR Ready Humax was it's destination. At $590 for the 500gb unit I think I will give it a miss. It sounds like just another VAST extortion attempt and to be honest a just friggin over this whole VAST pile of poo. My current Vast out lay is as follows:

    Lounge: UEC 4121 - $269.00, PVR Upgrade Kit - $55.00, Powered HDD 1TB $115.00 = $439.00
    Kids Area: UEC 4121 - $269.00 = $269.00
    Main Bedroom: UEC 4121 - $269.00, PVR Upgrade Kit - $55.00, Powered HDD 1TB $115.00 = $439.00

    Total = $1147.00

And don't forget all the LED Displays I have have inbuilt HD tuners and inbuilt PVR's.

I agree they need to drop the price to be competitive, no way will I pay that sort of money out on any vast box.

The Compliance requirements of vast, & the cost's associated with "submitting it for testing", have made it hard on the STB manufactures .......

I'm certain this was a conspiracy between Optus, UEC and the Federal Govt, intended to keep competition in the marketplace down on VAST decoders.

It worked for a long time, but finally we're seeing some competition from other manufacturers.
