    Default Tv power supply capacitors

Which caps are more likely to fail, the larger 1000-2200uf or smaller 22-100 uf ?
I know i need to replace some but should i replace everything on the board or just the large caps ?

Larger caps may be under more stress due to higher currents involved but from experience I have had just as many faulty small caps in PSUs and other items. So if you plan to do a general overhaul, replace the lot. Pulling the whole thing apart again just because you tried to save a few minutes or pennies is not worth it.

I'm thinking of doing the same to my SMPS for my LG 71 SA1D. All is well but the TV has done 15,000 hours (lamp meter) and im smelling (very slight) that acid smell from the SMPS.

    Agreed,

    Replace the lot.

If any of the caps are suss, there's a good chance others may be drying out or have varied considerably.

They may not show any physical signs, such as leakage or bulging, to be failing.

Yeah none have that typical bulge or leak of failing caps but i will replace the lot, i tried to get some low esr 1500uf 35V caps at jaycar but they didnt have any, only had normal elctrolytic in 2200uf 35V.

Normal caps will be fine, as above, low ESR are 'better' and typically used in power supply's

Going the next voltage up is the best thing to do and as you've probably read a thousand times, samsungs p/s caps are on par with the voltage.

I always replace the 'main' caps and usually any others near as for the smaller ones, I'll check voltages and is they're under the rated cap I don't bother.

If It's being donated to a family/friend or keeping, I replace most if I have them.

    The lower voltage rated caps
Get yourself an ESR meter and there will be no second guessing.

But if you're replacing one cap, the others won't be long gone too.

Replaced all apart from 2 x 1500uf 35v caps as Jaycar dont carry these, have to see if i can make it to RS during lunch break.
Tried with psu as it but still takes about 10mins to get a picture albeit with some ghosting and half frame freezing, possible t-con problem i guess ?

Yes make sure the voltage is the same.

Later on could you post a picture showing the screen fault.

EDIT disconnect the LVDS cable from the main board and t-con then reconnect and see if that does anything to the picture.

It could be either the t-con, main board or LVDS cable. Below is the typical fault finding procedure for that series of LCD's.

Hmmm small pic I'll re upload it

Slight update, swapped the LVDS cable over from a another set of the same model that i picked up for spares (which has a similar issue) and now i get a picture almost immediately but then goes lines shortly after - will post a pic tonight.
