    Default most efficient heater

sick of the cold so i wanna invest in a heater, but i also wanna keep the cost of running it right down
im after advice on the most efficient heater
makes and models would be cool
preferably an elctric heater but dosnt need to be really big as i only want it for one room to basically take the chill away.
also something portable as im renting.

    Cool

Electric heaters are always going to be the most expensive to run. If you must have electric then get one with a fan for maximum heat tranfer efficiency. The ceramic heaters are good only in that they are physically small compared to any other of the same heating capacity. They have a huge surface area in a small space for excellent heat transferrence. But at the end of the day a given amount of electricity can only provide a given amount of heat & you pay for that given amount of electricity. Its all about efficiency of heat transferrence & the ability of your room to preserve that heat. I would go for a ceramic heater with a fan.

    G'Day,
Seriously, efficiency wise there is little difference in electric radiator type heaters. Cannot exceed 100%.
I would feel that I'm issuing a death sentence to suggest a gas heater.
A little dearer, but with efficency in excess of 200/300% are Reverse Cycle or Heat Pumps. Small ones to fit in a window opening or such are available.
May be hard to understand, but no matter how cold(or hot)outside, they extract the heat energy from the air outside and recycle it to inside.
Works on same principle as a refrigerator.
With Reverse Cycle, you have the added bonus of summer cooling. Mine has been installed for 9 years, it's Heavenly.
Kindest Regards, " The Druid ".

We currently have reverse cycle ducted air plus 2 gas heaters, 1 older style and the other is a 25mj Rinnai with fan. Basically we use the gas heaters now that we have them but will still use the air con if it gets really cold over night because it has a timer that we can set for the morning. The beauty of the gas is that it is instant and if it gets too hot you can just turn it off. Not too sure on the running costs though as we havent received a gas bill yet.

Maybe im just lucky but i cant say that the plasma i have runs hot. Even after a few hrs of being on it still doesnt get hot. The 360 on the other hand, after playing it at night you could take it to bed and use it instead of a hot water bottle.

dig a pile of trenches in the backyard, fill with water pipes and reticulate back to the house, then the ground temperature will be the ambient temperature in the house.

you will only need to heat/cool from that base line temp.

saves heaps of money in europe.

    Cool Commendable, but,

Gee Whizz, That's called ' Geo Thermal '. Not exclusive to Europe.
    Well, almost anyway.

Last time I rented I was in a flat in a block of four, with a common laundry. An extension lead out of my back window and into a GPO in the laundry and my heating bills fell dramatically...

Hehe, I lived in a place which had a GPO connected to the shop next door, this GPO had many extension cords and multiple-outlet adaptors hanging off it.

Oil radiator type heaters are good if your staying in the room for while, but there slow to warm up. Fan heaters are good for instant heat, but inefficient for long use.

Also thermal underwear has to be the most efficient way to stay warm. However it does get costly buying enough for a few days worth.
