12 volt power adaptors
Hello All,
A couple of questions about 12 volt power conversion.
I'm wanting to hard wire a couple of things into my car without having to use cigarette lighter plugs.
One is a chinese no-name gps & the other is a powered RCA splitter.
The RCA splitter runs on DC 9 volt 600 mA and only comes with a 110v-240v adaptor.
The gps runs off a 5 volt 2 amp USB from a cigarette lighter plug that keeps falling to bits, the end thread where the fuse goes in is stripped & won't stay together.
I was wondering if this can be done?
And if so, how to go about it?
I'm guessing it can be done & probably quite easily, I've tried Jaycar & a couple of other places but they didn't seem interested in helping at all.
Thanks.

Jaycar actually sell DC-DC converters that will probably do the job.
Are you sure your GPS draws 2 Amps from USB? (seems a bit high)
These Jaycar products may do the job.
This one is in kit form, if you can assemble it.
The description says use a computer power supply as the input, but 12VDC from your car battery will work fine.

Thanks for the reply mtv.
To be honest I don't know what the gps draws, 2 Amps is what it has on the sticker on the cigarette lighter adapter.
Though the fuse that keeps falling out is only 0.5 amp so I guess the sticker might be wrong.
Might go with the top link of yours for the 9 volt RCA splitter & found for the gps as it has a USB outlet at 5 volt which will save me having to splice into it's current USB / lighter adapter lead as the other lead that came with it will plug straight in.
Easy enough to cut the cigarette lighter plug off & wire to a fuse box.
Might have a little chat to Jaycar about their customer service at a certain store too I think...
Thanks again.
My guess is your GPS will be drawing less than 500mW (=0.5A) which is why I was surprised when you said 2 amps.... especially for a USB device.
I looked at the adaptor in your link but didn't mention it as it was a cig plug and thought hard wiring would be better suited, but as you say, you can cut the plug off and hard wire anyway.
Unfortunately some Jaycar staff don't have much of an idea about their products.... just checkout kids.
Some are quite knowledgeable though.... luck of the draw which stores they work in.
