3 Mobile to shutdown in 2 months
CUSTOMERS of mobile phone provider 3, have two months to change service providers or face having their mobile phone service terminated.
Vodafone merged with 3 in 2009, creating the company Vodafone Hutchison Australia. The company said at the time it intended to eventually shut down the 3 business. As of August 30, 3 will no longer exist.
The company says it is unable to migrate 3 users over to Vodafone automatically due to contractual reasons.
A Vodafone spokesperson admitted to news.com.au that it could risk losing customers from its network and said "3 customers don't have to come to Vodafone if they don't wish to".
"Obviously we'd love for them to join us," the spokesperson said. "They have been using Vodafone's network since August last year, so the simplest way for them to continue using the service is go into a Vodafone store, grab a sim card and continue uninterrupted."
Vodafone's customer care director Cormac Hodgkinson said the company "would be contacting 3 customers directly in the coming weeks to see if they need any help making the switch to Vodafone".
Also coming to an end is 3's roaming agreement with Telstra where customers could register and pay to use data roaming in rural areas of Australia. That agreement will come to an end in July.
Vodafone says it expects about one per cent of its customers - largely based in rural areas - to be affected by the end of the agreement but says it has already reached out to affected customers.
"If you have not been contacted by Vodafone, you are not part of the one per cent," a Vodafone spokesperson told news.com.au.
Vodafone has tripled its network sites in regional areas, significantly expanding its mobile coverage areas. 3 users that switch to Vodafone won't have to pay for roaming as they will have full access to network coverage over Australia.

Gee
3 were a big player in there day.
But as the Queen Song goes
"We are the champions"
I found a Nokia CDMA phone I had with them the other day. Yep, they did a lot of big advertising in the early days.
I wonder if the 3 people will notice the difference in reception, one they are disconnected.

Lets just hope that vodafail can keep going as them out of it would shrink the competition drastically in my opinion with just 2 networks..
Vodaphone / 3 has always been crap service , they wont admit it. I was talking to one of thier account managers ( for my work phone ) and the call dropped out twice. she gave me the usual BS about them getting extra towers etc. all BS
so i asked her to call me back on my personal Telstra phone - guess what no dropouts
