    Default noob question about a quad LNB

    hi guys,
    i have an austar iq box, (using 2 outlets from my LNB)
    and another normal austar box (using a 3rd outlet from the LNB)

    now, my question is, does using 3 outlets on the lnb reduce the quality of signal from the dish to the boxes? i.e will the box get better signal during heavy rainy days if there was only a maximum of 2 connections from LNB to box? and put up another dish for the normal box?

    Nope. You need to use a larger dish to avoid rain fade.

    could you recommend a size? i have the standard one which comes with an austar install....

    Each output on a quad LNB has the same level and they operate independently, so whether you use one port or all four, the signal levels will remain the same.

    As mentioned, if you want to capture more signal and reduce rain fade, a bigger dish is the solution.

    The standard Foxtel/Austar dish size is 65cm, but larger dishes are standard in some areas.

    You didn't mention your location, but if it's like your name... it's Melton?

    You can still get rain fade with a larger dish.... even the big uplink dishes can lose signal if the rain is heavy enough.

    Personally, I'd use 85cm as a minimum size dish.

    The larger, the more resistant to rain fade.

    It would be unusual but, depending on location or terrain/foliage blocking, that you would need a larger dish.
    You could of cause go to an 85/95 cm dish.
    All outlets, used or not, should be sealed with Self Amalgamating Tape to minimise moisture ingress.

    I have both a 65 cm feeding several stb,s and an 85cm on a single UEC for VAST and in heavy rain and snow, the difference as to when each drops out or returns is measured generally in seconds with the Austar generally being back first.
    Over the last 15 years I have had Satellite reception, drop outs caused by weather conditions rarely number more than 6 times a year and average no more than 5 minutes at a time.
    I have longer signal loss due to power outages which I deal with by running a small generator as they are generally caused by lightning or lines down and last for a few hours and oddly enough that happens between 4 and 6 times a year.
    If I was doing a new install I might consider going bigger but I wouldnt bother replacing a working dish unless its in a poor state of repair.

    hi guys,

    thanks for all the replies..

    the reason i ask is because im renovating my home, and i have the dish currently sitting on the driveway on a triangular stand used for flat roofs.. the reception is quite good, and i havent had any issues even though its not fixed to the ground, but since i am renovating, i require a new FTA antenna and remounting the austar dish.

    but if the quad LNB has equal outputs, and i havent had any major issues, i think ill just stick to the dish i currently have.
