Default 3 Red Rings Of Death & 3 Towels

Has anyone heard of the towel trick for the xbox 360? I watched it on Youtube and have tried it but its doesnt work?

I have 3 rings of death on my 360 and i want to get it fixed. Can anyone fix this issue or does it need to go back to MS?

It doesnt have the warranty sticker so they wont except it.

    what shall i do?

towel trick works sometime (but only as a temporary fix)... and it will die again anyway

---> which also reminds me, I was having a read on XS a few weeks back and read about people baking their board in the oven to fix them.... anyone read that thread? I thought it was an absolute pisser stories of caps blowing and all sorts of things... not nearly as funny as the fella that tried to cool his PSU in water though.

I believe they will accept them without warranty stickers, or so I have read on this forum I think... in the case they do not they can be obtained for a price....

failing that the x-clamp replacement method does work fairly well on some consoles. I would exhaust all other avenues first though.

    good luck

yeah works well...if you are trying to burn your house down.

If you send to ms you will get a brand new mobo and dvd rom for FREE, why wouldn;t you do that as opposed to something EXTREMELY dangerous???

I have heard mixed reports on people trying to send opened boxes to Microsoft. But it is certainly worth a try, they can only say no. As Mick says they will give u basically a new xbox

BTW the towel trick is a load of rubbish.

Mick or myself will be happy to repair it for you if Microsoft won't

How are you guys going to repair dry joints under the BGA?
What would you do if your server was stolen or failed beyond repair?

The point im making mick, is, without the right specialised tools, special microscopes, preheaters, and computer controlled rework tools required, every job I have seen done so far has "re-failed". So how can you or anyone else without the correct equipment claim to do it?

how do you know that I don't have the correct equipment mate???

I've had a pretty good strike rate here, ask a few members(they may post here?) I'm not claiming to do it, I do do it!!!
Infrared heatguns do wonderful things for 3RLOD, I can assure you @ $6500 they arent cheap either.

The equipment is expensive, BUT, you don't need preheaters, computer controlled rework tools.

to be honest with you, it can also be done with the small kits they sell on ebay too.

The re failing has nothing to do with how it was done, it has lots to do with the size of the gpu/cpu, motherboard flex and the lack of decent heatsinks.

Hope this clears any confusion up mate.

Mick, I was not having a go at you, I asked how you were doing it reliably. As I said, I have seen many who claim to do this work and yet the proof has been in the re-failures a few months down the road. Hell you could use a hotair gun from bunnings if you really wanted to in the removal and replacement of the chip, but as this doesnt apply the "correct constant and controlled" temperature to all of the bga chip at the same time, you run a very high risk of dry joints or the original fault re-occurring.

I am just keen to hear what process you are using to perform the job. You say that your work is reliable, im not arguing with you, im trying to find out why your fixes are reliable when others are not.

I have never seen the kits your referring to on ebay, but i dont go looking on ebay very often.

nah its cool mate, I didn't take it that way either.

you may recall that I was one of the first to start fixing 3RLOD(supra King, now FTO king will vouch for that) I kept my secrets on how to do since then, this is the only tip I have EVER released about 3RLOD fixes.

You see the problem is mate, some charge for reballing and simply do no more than heatgun trick or x clamp trick, thats where reliability reports come into the equation.

The infrared heat seems to work well as it is concentrated where required.

I'm also not saying that it wont/ cannot happen again as I ALWAYS advise a customer that it is by far better for MS to fix thier product, after all it was them that sold the customer a dodgy product, not me...lol

Cool. Thanks for the explanation, that makes things a lot clearer. I have seen the infrared irons/tools around over the last few years but never really looked into them at all. I might have to do a bit of research now to quench my curiosity on them.

better value for money, more games available, moddable....should I go on....LMFAO

I really think Sony should of had the option from the start with the 40GB console and 60GB console. People would of seen the value to upgrade to 60gb version then!

I've been thinking of buying the ps3 only for the bluray and internet connect via wifi. But i still think it's alittle to expensive.. The xbox 360 is great for games though.. haven't done firmware though as im only sticking to a few games.

I'm very picky when it comes to games..
