    Default AV Help Surround Sound

Just after some help with my pay TV, I run an AV Cord (Yellow red and White) from the pay tv box to the television, I am wanting the sound to go through a surround system I can achieve this by not running the red and white cords to the tv and into the surround sound system but then there is no sound on the television only on the surround sound system, I see on the tv that is has audio out I have tried using this but it doesnt seem to work, can anyone suggest a cord or something I might need that may help????

The red/white cables carry stereo only.

If your pay tv decoder has optical, coaxial (audio) or HDMI then these connections will carry surround audio on channels which support it.

Surround sound (eg Dolby/DTS) is only available on HD channels from an HD decoder.

You need to connect from your pay tv box to your surround system via one of those methods.

The audio out on most tv's is usually only from the tv's built-in tuner.

BTW, using the 'yellow' composite connection for video gives you the lowest quality picture.

HDMI or component RGB will provide much higher picture quality.

Thanks MTV, the problem I have is that the pay tv box and television are 20 metres apart, I have got a TV set up in my shed and the easiest way to get Pay tv there was to run a long set of AV leads. Plus the Pay TV box doesnmt have HDMI

If you only want to connect the R/W stereo audio cables to both the TV and the amp simultaneously, a small distribution amp will do the job, but as I mentioned, it won't give you true surround sound.

Given your Pay TV box doesn't have HDMI, suggests it's an SD box only.

Whilst they may work, directly connecting the output of one device to the output of another device can potentially cause damage.

This principle is the same as just joining all your antenna wires together, instead of using a splitter.

Using a proper distribution amp isolates devices from each other, compensates for losses and maintains the correct impedance, etc.

I was warned of the problems MTV reports by another competent technician but as usual being a cheap arse and knowing everything I used them anyway and luckily they worked.
I'll correct that and say I had already used them before I was told of the risks but being a cheap arse etc etc..................

Isnt competency judged by the abillty to prevent too much 'Blue Smoke' escaping during a job???

But if you were being paid to do job and you suspected these connectors could cause any problems, I am sure you would prefer to use other connection methods or advise the person of your concerns and let them decide.

    Hi lonegull

Have you thought of using a rf modulator to inject the video and audio to your antenna system and then running a rg6 quad shield to your shed TV then use the audio out to your amp. Then as a bonus any other TV's on the same antenna system can watch as well

Hay guys, did any one think of looking up what connections an Austar Flinders box has, they are made by UEC & designated a DSD 999.

There is 4 sets of audio connections he has the choice of using, 2 sets of RCA Analogue (red & white), 1 mono (grey), and 1 SPDIF digital coaxial (orange). The SPDIF would be the best one to run to the surround system which he wants to do.

So lonegull get a single coaxial cable with RCA connectors on it & connect from that to your surround sound SPDIF Digital Coaxial input, your triple can be connected to the TV & your done. You can even use a spare analogue red, white & yellow if its a triple & just use one color to connect the audio.
If you surround sound doesn't have Digital coaxial just use the spare Red & White analogue connections on the back of the Flinders.

Source: Look for the first box, the standard Austar.
    Cheers, Tiny
