    Default Strange IE7 problem

Hey guys, my parents have a strange problem with computer. They tell me that they cant get on internet, but can send/receive Emails. The two computer screens down bottom are there and saying connected, but when try to open ie, nothing happens.( I know they should use firefox)
I have tried everything I can think of over the phone. They are running XP sp2, nortons 360(i think) they dont have any anti mal/spy ware installed, and cant get any cause cant get on net.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

Something is blocking http requests - probably Nortons.

Quite often when I am online, my website access drops - but I often don't realise it as YIM, MSN and P2P keep working perfectly.
Have to reboot the modem to solve it. Then everything works Ok again.

Ok, rules that one out then.

Try to get them to shut Nortons down if they can - if it will let them, then see if they can access the net.
The only other thing I can think of it somehow the connection settings in the Options panel have become changed - eg IE is trying to access the net through a proxy or such, rather than "detect settings automatically".

The fact they can send and receive emails shows that they have a working connection, but without knowing a bit more, we are shooting in the dark really.

From memory there was a glitch with a update that causes that problem

There is a registry fix, cut and paste below into notepad and rename to ie.reg and get them to run it to merge into registry. might have to disable nortons.

    ----------------------------------
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
    "RunOnceHasShown"=dword:00000001
    "RunOnceComplete"=dword:00000001

Thanks for everyones help, Like I said, I am 1600km away and work full time. I am trying to do this by telephone(when I am home) I dont have computer access at work.
Now with that out of the way,
-System restore said that it could not go back to an earlier restore point (tried several)
-I am not sure how to "merge" the registry fix myself, let alone try and try and explain it to my old parents over the phone.
-The only firefox mini, I could find seemed to be for PDA's is this correct?

    Thank you

Get then to check the event logs.

    Email then

    Backup system.

Remove software, eg ie7 (), nortons, etc. (can put back on later)

    This could solve the problem

    Go to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\In... Explorer\Main].

The two keys that you need to stop the madness

    KeyName: RunOnceHasShown
    KeyType: REG_DWORD

    KeyValue: 1

    KeyName: RunOnceComplete
    KeyType: REG_DWORD
    KeyValue: 1

Also MAKE SURE IE7 application is added to Nortons approved list.

Interesting how throughout this whole thread, two pieces of junk keep rearing their ugly heads - Nortons and IE.

    Who needs it?

Mmmmm i dunno if it say that... How many more times to we need to add a plugin for Firefox, then when you try, it says "plugin unknown" or it just will not install.

Eg: Using FF to open Pli web interface, you get a scrolling ticker where with IE7 you do not. But conversely IE7 will load and display web-x-tv and FF stuggles too.

Both IE7 and Firefox have their strong points and Opera is a way behind them.
But by no means could you say Firefox is a complete package.

You know when I think about it, I can't say that any of the computers that I have repaired had Firefox running on it, but they certainly do when it leaves my hands
I just tell them to have a play and see if they like it.
