Default Installing Mac os on an Intel PC

Has anybody installed Mac os x on an Intel PC with XP Pro?
I have seen a few tuts, but would like to know if anyone here has actually done it. My kids use Macs at school, and I would like them to be able to have the option at home too. I know I could buy a Mac, but thats not an option at this point in time.
    Cheers

Biggun, have a look here runs perfectly on intel and amd hardware and you can either boot into XP or Vista or OSX. You can also run a proggy called parallels within osx which runs XP really well without having to boot directly into it.

    cheers

It's a major can of worms you're opening there.

I've managed to get OS 10.5.2 running on my AMD/Nforce system. It was along slow journey but after much experimentation I can now boot it up and play with it for about a five minutes before it locks up and has to be hard powered off.

If you're packing Intel, you may have more luck.

BUt to offer backup to Fred121, is definitely chockas with info on this topic.

    E.E.

As soon as Leopard come out, I tried it out. Take ages to get to work properly, then when it did, have never used it again on my pc. Think I did it just to prove it could be done, no other reason.

Sounds a bit like me Navy, but i think my kids would probably use it if I could get it going. Seems a bit too much work at this stage. Too many diff options, lol

Yeh can be very flaky, driver issues etc. It may have improved with 10.5.2 and modifications to install process etc, but havent investigated it any further since Leopard initially come out. Really u might be biting off more than u can chew if U want it work just like a macbook or imac. Just my 2cents.

Seems like I am biting off more than I can chew Navy. Was just hoping for basic mac operating system to play around with. I now know that it isnt as easy as that.

Buy an e Mac, you see them on eBay for $150-$200 for most word processing, internet browsing and emailing there fine, and you have the real deal. You don't want to move them too often though weigh a ton.

just goto the insalymac forum or what every that address is, you can find stickies and there's even a wiki of all the tested hardware. Your best bet is to make sure you have compatible hardware first then look into what builds you need to install it.

Cheers Nerd, have been on the Insanely Mac forum for weeks, and done a ton of reading. Seems that the components are fairly specific as to getting OS X to run on them. Looking in to it, but not as obsessed as I was before. If I Manage to get it going I will let everyone in on my secrets. lol

would save a lot of hassle if it just worked

Have a go Biggun its not that hard if you follow the tutes on insanelymac and it works perfectly as long as you have the right hardware. I.E. intel core2duo, nvidia video card, I used a newish gigbyte mobo. Now have running, Macosx 10.5.4, XP, Vista,. BTW you can run xp and vista in a virtual machine in osx with parallels. Worth a try and your kids will love you and its cheaper and dare I say better than using mac hardware as osx flies.

Cheers Fred, it seems that my intel machine may be a bit old and my AMD machine is full of all my important stuff, and cant afford to stuff it up, and Lappy isnt compatable. Might have to hunt around for components and build a purpose built machine?

i would definetly have a look at emacs on ebay, ive had one for years and i still love it although it dosnt get used much but i keep it because its just not worth the money i paid anymore but for the mac experience its great.
i can even plug it into my 22' monitor
