Default Playstation and Xbox Next Gen Consoles Not Matching PC Power

Millions upon millions of gamers around the world are crawling out of their skin waiting for Microsoft and Sony’s next-generation video game consoles to launch, but according to some plugged-in tech industry executives, the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are actually a “downgrade.”

For those that didnt see the recent article in Forbes, they recently spoke with executives from chip makers AMD and Nvidia about the upcoming consoles set to launch ahead of the holidays this year, and both companies seem to share a common position: The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are great machines, but they’re nothing compared to PC gaming.

AMD is responsible for the custom Jaguar chipsets that will power both the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4, and the company makes the Wii U’s graphics processor as well. AMD’s deal with Microsoft alone is worth more than $3 billion, but that didn’t stop an AMD representative from pointing out how much better PCs are for gaming, however.

The spokesperson also noted that high-end PC rigs don’t just offer better gaming experiences than consoles, they also can do everything a computer can do, thus making them far more versatile than video game consoles.

I've been a fan of PC gaming for many years and I think that they offer a much better power to cost ratio than consoles as well as the upgradeability (is that a word!)

For me consoles are fantastic and are much more about gaming than a PC ever wil be!

What do the rest of you think?

Well obviously PC's will always have more power than consoles. The graphic power of consoles will always be level for the entire generation, but PC's graphic cards constantly get better. I actually just ordered a Titan and plan on being able to run every game imaginable at the highest settings.

Majority of people will go with a console because they are cheaper, easier to setup and use. They can purchase a game and know it will work on their console every time.

Considering that the cost of the entire console is about as much as a mid range video card, i can see the attraction to consoles. Plus as already stated, every game is gonna run the same as everyone elses games. Each have their place.

This is exactly how it goes. I get more enjoyment out of my PC, but I know I'm a special use case because I'm a power user.

The other thing to remember is that programming for PC optimization can be a lot harder. When you only have to worry about one specific set of hardware, developers can do much better work with that. For example, The Last of Us pushes the PS3 to its absolute limits. The devs could not get that much power out of the system if they had to make it multiplatform, and could only get it out of PC because it's so powerful that you don't need perfect optimization to make it work.

The only thing consoles have over a PC is that they are *in general* more reliable and will last longer than a PC, a lot of people prefer using the dualshock 3 for example over a keyboard.

They will never build console as powerful as as pc as this would kill of another industry money maker. PC will always have the grunt, but in saying that at time people just want to press 1 button and sit back on lounge after hard days of work and just game on with out the needed of sitting in front of pc monitor or installing new graphics cards or drivers

The steam box certainly seems to be coming close to having the computatinial power of a PC. I'll be watching that space.

Of course a chipset manufacture is going to advocate pcs over a console think about it a top notch gaming machine is good for what 2 maybe three years how old is the 360 nearly 10years November 2005 the first ones were released and unlike a PC when a console falls over there's no guarantee a customer will buy a whole new unit (because some of us clever scum bags buy parts that may even be second hand) and repair them so no of course AMD will champion PC sales as they are a high turnover item which makes larger volume sales. That said I agree with the comment about more functionally with the PC but I like the insurance I get by having a console that until the next generation comes out if it's made for the device it WILL work first time every time
